A ‘Malaguena’ is a woman living in the Spanish port city of Malaga on the southern coast of Spain in the province of Andalucia. Lecuona’s Malaguena was originally the sixth movement of his Suite Andalucia and has been performed in many versions by artists such as Connie Francis Stan Kenton’s Orchestra and Bill Haley and the Comets as well as featuring as part of the Broadway musical entitled Blast! This brass band arrangement has been made by Mark Freeh. Brass Band Grade 3: Youth and 4th Section Duration: 6 minutes

For centuries composers have been inspired by the beautiful O Magnum Mysterium text depicting the birth of the new-born King among the lowly animals and shepherds. This arrangement for symphonic band has been transcribed from the original unaccompanied choral setting. Morten Lauridsen is one of America’s most-loved and most-performed living composers and this arrangement is rich in colour deeply spiritual and intensely moving. Its very high level of difficulty provides a great challenge for the conductor and musicians. You will be taken through a living Nightmare with spine-chilling passages as dissonant chords alternate with aggressive percussion. Daydream is a patchwork of solos with all the brass band soloists playing serene and soft melodic lines with a virtuosic trombone cadenza. Finally Visions portrays visions of insanity reflected by violent and discordant descending motifs leading to visions of joy presented in a sparkling and cheerful finale.

Vittorio Monti was born on January 6 1868 in Naples (Italy). His musical education (violin and composition) he enjoyed at the conservatory there. Around his 30's Monti went to Paris. He earned a living as a conductor and wrote several ballets and operettas. In his last years Monti died in 1922 he devoted himself to teaching and composing. His famous 'Czardas' has made his name known even today. Initially the czardas was a Hungarian folk dance but after the mid-nineteenth century it was even a dance for the upper-class. Czardas begins with a slow introduction the Lassan (slow and sad) and then the fast part Friska follows. Czardas is not as somany people think typical gypsy music.

Partly based on the hymn tune Laudate Dominum-This work is based on a well-known myth about the city of Zwolle in the Netherlands. In the waters surrounding Zwolle lived a dragon that regularly emerged. Time and time again he threatened to destroy the city with his fiery breath if he was not given a living sacrifice. The archangel Michael who manifested himself as a young knight saved the city. In a fight he beheaded the monster with his sword. Later Saint Michael fighting the dragon which was a symbol of evil and injustice acquired a permanent place on the city coat of arms. For this composition the hymn tune Laudate Dominum has been chosen as a central musical theme for the archangel. The dragon isreflected in a series of chords that evoke a somewhat ominous association.
