Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references.

The Stabat Mater is the last work composed by Giuseppe Verdi. He completed it in 1897 at the age of 84. One year later it was published with the somewhat earlier Te Deum as part of the Quattro pezzi sacri. Verdi set Mary's meditation in the face of her crucified son, a classic of Medieval Latin poetry, in an operatically expressive style for choir and large orchestra. Verdi's Stabat Mater is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series Choir & organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2729400.

The ambitious late work of Georg Philipp Telemann, consciously dedicated to vocal composition, begins with the Donner-Ode (1756/1760). As a symbol thunder represents the forces of nature, here in close connection to the traumatic earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. The characteristic arrangement of the vocal parts and the scoring with three trumpets, the soloistic use of the timpani and instrumental ensemble made this avant-garde work popular and well known already during the composer's lifetime. The new edition presented here takes into consideration important, newly discovered sources such as the autograph of the first part.

Puccini's first known sacred work was composed during his school days at the Istituto Pacini in Lucca. It was first performed there in 1877. The text was a hymn to the Patron Saint of Lucca which was probably written by the composer himself. The work was so popular that by 1880 it had received three further performances, though it was also inserted in the Messa a 4 voci, after the Credo. Thereafter it disappeared from the music world and was only first rediscovered in the 1990s. Since, with the exception of the lack of a solo tenor in the piece, it is identical with this one in the Messa, for this reason it would seem only natural to perform these two works together. This six-movement cantata uses the hymn of the same name by Ahasverus Fritsch, first recorded in 1698 in the Darmstadter Liederbuch. This places it amongst those chorale cantatas which use a hymn from the repertoire associated with Pietism. As was customary, the hymn text is retained in the outer movements, whereas the text for the inner movements - two secco recitatives and a tenor and a bass aria - are concerned with the contrast between the hostile world and the certainty of Jesus; the links between the cantata text and the Feast of the Epiphany are correspondingly tenuous. In the first movement the soprano sings the hymn melody complete, accompanied by mainly homophonic vocal parts, whilst the instrumental writing is largely influenced by the melody of the first line of the hymn. Remarkable is the tenor aria, with its contrasting central section and its chromatic twists and turns, in which Bach once again proves himself to be a master of harmony. The demands on the chorus are fairly modest, whereas the instrumentalists are challenged in the first movement and in both the arias. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3112300.

The cantate was most likely performed for the first time on 27 September, the 16th Sunday after Trinity, 1716 at the Schlosskirche in Weimar. The text originated from the Kantatenjahrgang (yearly cantata cycle), Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer (Evangelical Devotional Offering) by the secretary of the Weimar high conistory, Salomon Franck. The sermon text for the 16th Sunday after Trinity, the raising of the boy from the dead at Nain (Luke 7: 11-14), is only indirectly reflected in Franck's cantata text. In a prevalent interpretation from that period of this biblical text, the raising of the dead is seen as an allegory for the resurrection of the faithful. Johann Adam Hiller's Psalm 100 can be considered as the highpoint of his church music. The work was known during the lifetime of the composer far beyond Germany, even to the Baltic States. Now the first printed edition of this beautifully sounding psalm setting is available. The five-movement composition is suited both for concert as well as liturgical purposes. Even today this composition of the St. Thomas Cantor and founder of the Leipziger Gewandhaus concert series will not fail to miss its mark. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4094300.

This is a beautiful and rewarding composition by a former member of the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir in Leipzig and later Dresden Kreuzkantor. Inspite of the relatively easy level of difficulty, its effect will not fail to impress. This three-movement Christmas cantata for mixed choir and orchestra makes it possible to perform the piece both in worship services and in concert. He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi.

The Magnificat shows the typical personal style of the composer Gunther Martin Gottsche, who was inspired by the colorful harmonics of French Impressionism as well as by elements of jazz music. He has given equal consideration to both the vocal line and the ease of execution as well as an understanding for the musical events and a comprehensible interpretation of the text. The work, which was revised at the beginning of 2016, is based on an earlier work commissioned for the Dresden Kreuzkirche. A version with organ accompaniment (instead of orchestra) is also available. Score available separately - see item CA.2721000.
