The British composer did much to keep alive and transform the Victorian tradition of English choral music purge its piety and drag it into the (late) twentieth century.Missa Brevis which is Latin for 'short Mass' usually refers to a mass composition that is short because part of the text of the Mass ordinary that is usually set to music in a full mass is left out or because its execution time is relatively short. Along with Bernstein Britten and Kodály Leighton was one of the composers still writing in this genre in the 20thcentury.Missa Brevis was written for the choir of Liverpool Cathedral and was published in 1968. It has become one of the most popular choral settings of the communion service by a contemporary composer and is regularly heard at cathedrals and churches throughout Britain and America. Whispered And Revealed is a setting of H. W. Longfellow's 'Snow-Flakes' by composer Nico Muhly. It is arranged for SATB Choir and Harp and this is the full score. Nico Muhly himself states that the music of Whispered And Revealed reflects the delicacy of winter weather while the text and music hint at a certain anxiety. The Missa Brevis by Mozart was written in 1774 for an unknown occasion but it has been suggested that the basilica of St Maria Plain near Salzburg was its intended recipitent. A powerful and attractive work which is ideal for a liturgical context as well as in the concert hall. This full vocal score for Missa Brevis contains the complete setting for full mixed SATB choir with Piano accompaniment and solo passages for sections of the Gloria Credo Benedictus and Agnus Dei.

“Missa brevis in F in score. This was the first Mass which Mr. Haydn composed whilst still a student” says an entry in the catalogue of Haydn’s musical estate. Circa 1798/99 Haydn entered the work without an incipit in his working catalogue as “Missa brevis in F. / a due Soprani”. Around 1805/06 he added in shaky decrepit handwriting to the title “Missa.” on the front page of the organ part of one of the set of parts prepared by his copyist Johann Elßler: “Brevis / di me Giuseppe Haydn mpria / 1749”. This date the earliest yet found on a work by Haydn corresponds to the title of the Haydn catalogue whichindicates the eighteenth year of Haydn’s life i. e. 1749/50 as the starting point of his work: “Catalogue of all those compositions which I happen to remember writing from my 18th to my 73rd year of life.” In 1805 Haydn set about adding further instruments to the original scoring for two violins and figured organ bass and by 15th February 1806 the larger instrumentation was ready as is evidenced by a letter written on this very day by the Haydn biographer Georg August Griesinger. In the last decade, Krzysztof Penderecki composed a Sanctus and Benedictus for treble choir, and he has now used these movements as the basis of his Missa brevis. The new mass setting adds male voices in fitting with the structure of the boys\' choir, which will be celebrating its 800th anniversary with the first performance of this work.Penderecki\'s oeuvre contains many sacred works, with numerous compositions based on sections of the Catholic Mass.
