16 Short Lyric Pieces for Flute and Piano-This collection is the first-ever publication of 19th-20th Century exam pieces composed for the Paris Conservatory meticulously compiled arranged and edited over the course of many years by accomplished flutist Nancy Andrews. Par ARNOLD MALCOLM. Dedicated to Sir James Galway, who gave the first performance in 1977 at New Hall, Cardiff, this Sonata for flute is in three movements. The composer writes, 'there are so many works for flute which are solely vehicles for instrumental virtuosity that I have attempted to write a piece where the musical element is more to the fore. Graham Powning (b. 1949) is a contemporary Australian composer and woodwind player well known for letting his sense of humour shine through into his compositions. This Mazurka with its characteristic emphasis on the second beat of the bar consists basically of a rondo theme separated by episodes in (mostly) related keys. When I first heard it it occurred to me that it would work particularly well for the flute accompanied by piano (or indeed harp). The harp's basic key is Cb major making flat keys more natural for the instrument. The key here is Bb minor which has a warmth well-suited to the flute although the piece does touch on Db major F minor and C major before ending triumphantly in Bb major.The first performance was given by Philip Tinker in March 2006.

Composed for Emma Halnan winner of The Arts Club – Sir Karl Jenkins Music Award 2016. The composer comments that “for the first ten years of this century I lived and composed on the Gower Peninsula an area of sandy beaches and dramatic cliff scenery with coastal caves; the first area in the UK to be officially designated as one of outstanding natural beauty. Living in an old mill alongside the Bury Pill stream I wrote from a stable block enjoying a vista across Cheriton Valley and the river to Ryers Down. This work is a musical reflection of time spent there.”

This collection of 21 popular tunes has been carefully arranged and graded to provide attractive teaching repertoire for young flautists. The familiarity of the material will stimulate pupils' enthusiasm and encourage theirpractice. The technical demands of the solo part increase progresively up to the standard of Associated Board Grade I. The piano accompaniments are simple yet effective and should be within the range of most pianists.Jerry Lanning is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is a widely experienced arranger in both popular and classical fields with many published arrangements to his credit.
