Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is regarded as one of the last great harp-players of Ireland and seems to be surrounded by an almost mystical aura. Numerous anecdotes exist which testify to a strong personality and a tremendous musical talent as well as enormous self-confidence. The Allegretto grazioso (3rd movement), arranged here for flute choir, is reminiscent of the Slavonic Dances of Antonin Dvorak. The flute orchestra version is arranged for six C flute parts, two alto flutes, two bass flutes and a contrabass flute. There are many versions of Ave Maria in the world and it is very risky to compete with Schubert, Bach or Caccini (Vavilov). I did not begin to compose another aria, but composed a polyphonic version, in which the intertwining voices, harmony, unusual rhythm changes and a wide palette of shades play the main role.
