A3 conductor's score for Lu s Tinoco's Before Spring for Symphony Orchestra.Originally composed in 2010 this new Orchestral version was premièred by the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Joana Carneiro at the S. Carlos Theatre in Lisbon on the 18th of January 2014.'Before Spring' was originally scored for 16 players following a commission from the OrchestrUtopica to be performed as a tribute piece to Stravinky?s 'The Rite of Spring'. It was premièred on the 29th of May 2010 by the OrchestrUtopica conducted by Cesário Costa at the CCB Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. Following a commission from OPART / TeatroNacional de São Carlos 'Before Spring' was later revised and scored for Symphony Orchestra. - Lu s Tinoco.

Symphonic Fragment for Orchestra. Par SHCHEDRIN RODION. Emotional depth and riveting virtuosity - these elements are what characterise many compositions by Rodion Shchedrin. Even though he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born Shchedrin has remained an original Russian composer whose bond with the musical folklore and poetry of his home country has never been severed. This 'Symphonic Fragment', premiered by Mariss Jansons with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, refers to the life of Beethoven and the first major existential crisis of the then 31-year-old composer from Vienna. Even if Shchedrin fails to include explicit quotations, suggestions of Beethoven's 'Eroica' can well be found. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk Programme note Morpheus in the Greek mythology is the most powerful of the Oneroi the gods of dreams. He is the one who sends us our dreams and he may appear to us within the dreams in disguise. Analogous to the logic of dreams in Morpheus everything is interwoven as chains of associations appear to logically lead us from one line of thought to another. Everything seems strangelyfamiliar. But the logic is treacherous and we already feel it may only be valid within the dream. Nothing that appears similar is actually ever really the same. Half awakening we struggle to hold on to a vanishing world we felt we were on the verge of understanding but which we already know will eventually escape us when we fully awake. Music from the last movement of the Ninth Symphony. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823. In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. This poem sprang from Schiller's idealistic vision of men who become brothers – a vision Beethoven shared with him. In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem. The well-known conductor Herbert von Karajan was commissioned to arrange three instrumental versions – for solo piano, wind orchestra and symphony orchestra. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for. In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states, but rather celebrates common values as well as unity in diversity. These Premises Are Alarmed was written for the Halle Orchestra during Thomas Ades's period as Composer-in-Association with them. The first performance was given by the Halle Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano at one of the Opening Concerts of the Bridgewater Hall Manchester on 12 September 1996.

The fifth feature film that Peter Greenaway and Michael Nyman produced in 1991 Prospero's Books is a reworking of The Tempest. The score was written for the Michael Nyman Band and made into a suite for chamber orchestra in 1994.The first performance was given by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ivor Bolton in January 1995.

Par MURAIL TRISTAN. Time and Again tente de rompre, partiellement, avec l'esthétique qui domine dans mes oeuvres précédentes, une esthétique de la continuité où la forme est structurée par des processus se déroulant en un flot presque ininterrompu. Ici, la forme musicale cherche à créer une architecture du temps plus complexe, qui joue de flash-backs, prémonitions, boucles..., comme si l'on se trouvait dans une sorte de machine à remonter le temps. Pour néanmoins préserver une sorte de continuité sous-jacente, j'ai d'abord imaginé une structure 'linéaire' pour la pièce, comportant des évolutions progressives et logiques, et j'ai parfois réalisé des fragments de cette pièce virtuelle, puis, un peu comme un cinéaste, j'ai 'monté' la structure de la pièce, en coupant, dupliquant, insérant, collant. A peu près aux deux tiers de la pièce, le temps s'inverse et s'écoule deux fois plus vite - on repasse, plus symboliquement que textuellement, par toutes les étapes des deux premiers tiers, avec parfois des superpositions, des inserts ou des raccourcis. L'orchestration n'est pas tout à fait conventionnelle - les vents et la percussion sont en nombre habituel, mais les cordes sont réduites à environ la moitié de l'effectif normal. J'ai cherché ainsi une qualité particulière du son des cordes moins volumineux, mais plus intense. Les cordes jouent le plus souvent des parties individuelles. Leur emploi principal consiste à colorer ou distordre les sons joués par les autres instruments, ou à construire des spectres sonores complexes. L'orchestre est enrichi par un synthétiseur (un Yamaha DX7) qui a deux principales fonctions. Grâce à son aptitude à synthétiser des sons par modulation de fréquence, il peut émettre directement des spectres riches identiques à ceux que j'utilise dans mon écriture orchestrale. La composition de cette pièce a donc impliqué d'abord la programmation des sons sur le synthétiseur (un seul son peut produire une texture très riche et n'est souvent utilisé qu'une seule fois). Dans d'autres cas, je l'utilise comme un complément de la section des percussions et du piano, le synthétiseur ayant la tâche d'émettre les sons non tempérés. Time and Again est une commande du 'John Feeney Charitable Trust' pour le City of Birmigham Symphony Orchestra, et a été créé à Birmingham le 21 janvier 1986 par cet orchestre, sous la direction de Simon Rattle. La pièce était destinée à être jouée en première partie de la Turangalila Symphonie d'Olivier Messiaen, pour une série de concerts en Angleterre. Cela explique qu'un auditeur attentif trouvera peut-être quelques allusions à cette symphonie dans Time and Again... Miniature Score.This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was first performed on 13th May 1998 London. This piece is based on a genuine old tune 'Maxwell's Strathspey' which the composer found inan 1824 collection of Scottish melodies and which unfolds at the start of the piece on solo cello. Variations and a bold up-tempo to the quick dance we know as a reel ultimately yield to the magic that has been promised right atthe start: the northern lights take over at the end of the piece. Its inspiration comes from a walk to a community event in Hoy Hall during which Davies saw the lights in the sky pulsing in and out of time with the sounds comingfrom the hall. Duration 12 minutes.
