Georg Philipp Telemann's (1681-1767) Gulliver Suite, was composed only two years after the first publication of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels in 1726. In the suite, Telemann embraces Swift's satire by emulating the characters in a variety of musical ways. The five movements are: Intrada, Lilliputian Chaconne, Brobdingnagian Gigue, Reverie of the Laputans and their attendant flappers, and the Loure of the well-mannered Houyhnhnms/Wild Dance of the untamed Yahoos. This edition includes parts transposed for G flutes, such that any combination of flutes can be used. The Lilliputians can be piccolos, and the Brobdingnagians a pair of contra flutes. Or perhaps theopposite! Feel free to experiment, mix and match all you like! Par LEMMENS JACQUES-NICOLAS. Fanfare by Belgian composer Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens, arranged for Flute Choir by Matt Johnston. Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823?1881) is a composer unfamiliar to most, unless you happen to be either an organist, or a Belgian (or a Belgian organist!). At the age of 26, he was appointed organ teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with two of his most accomplished students being Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor. In 1879 he founded a school for church music in Mechelen, Belgium, which would later bear his name upon moving to Leuven in 1968. The Lemmensinstituut has since broadened its curriculum beyond church music and is a prominent, award-winning music conservatory. Par COLERIDGE-TAYLOR SAMUEL. Danse Nègre, from the African Suite by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, arranged for flute choir by Paige Dashner Long. Coleridge spent his childhood in Croydon, Surrey, England, where he studied violin with his grandfather and also sang in the church choir. At 15, he was accepted to the Royal College of Music, where during his second year, he changed his major from violin to composition. At the age of 20, he met the African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, who encouraged him to focus on his African heritage. The Irish poet Thomas Moore wrote the poem 'The Last Rose of Summer' in 1805, using the traditional tune 'The Young Man's Dream,' first transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792. This collection of hymn meditations is designed for maximum flexibility for church musicians, yet the meditations could certainly be performed in other settings, like recitals or for personal enjoyment or prayer. The hymns were chosen to ensure options for each liturgical season: Creator of the Stars of Night (Advent), What Child Is This? (Christmas), Were You There? (Lent), At the Lamb's High Feast (Easter), Alleluia, Sing to Jesus (Ordinary Time), and Praise to the Lord (Ordinary Time). Each piece can be performed as written, or in a shorter form which skips the unadorned hymn and focuses on the meditation. Although originally conceived just prior to the pandemic in early 2020, the melody and words became even more important as our daily lives began to change with the spread of the virus around the world. As the son of a minister, traditional hymns were a big part of the composer's life.
