À la fin du XVIIIe siècle , le violoncelliste et compositeur Jean-Baptiste Bréval n’a pas seulement créé des concertos virtuoses pour son instrument, mais aussi des sonates plus faciles ainsi que des duos qui, de nos jours, font toujours partie du noyau dur du répertoire pédagogique du violoncelle. La Sonate en Ut majeur op. 40 n° 1, qui s’ouvre sur des accords très prenants, offre déjà aux violoncellistes débutants la possibilité de se laisser emporter dans de superbes mélodies, et de maîtriser de petits changements de position.
La première édition parue à Paris en 1799 n’est pas très précise concernant le choix de l’instrument d’accompagnement. C’est pourquoi plusieurs alternatives sont proposées dans cette édition Urtext: une partition à deux parties, permettant à un second violoncelle, pendant le cours, d’accompagner commodément, de même qu’un discret soutien pour piano, pouvant être utilisé lors d’auditions. The nine sonatas for Cello and Basso Continuo by Antonio Vivaldi are among the most famous Cello works of the Baroque era. Thanks to their moderate technical demands the pieces are an integral part of music lessons as well as of private music-making. But even for the professional early music scene they form a focus of the Cello repertoire. The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition serves the needs and demands of all three target groups alike providing a reliable musical text which is no longer based on the unauthorized first Paris edition by Le Clerc & Boivin but on a copy from Naples revised by Vivaldi himself as well as on two othermanuscripts associated with the composer from the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the music library of the Counts of Schönborn at Wiesentheid. Apart from the solo part the edition comprises a Piano (Harpsichord) score with realized Basso Continuo which should be very welcome to pupils and amateurs. An unrealized Basso Continuo part has been added for the professional Continuo player in which the figures of the first Paris edition has been included. Even if they do not trace back to Vivaldi himself they bear witness to the contemporary Basso Continuo practice and can serve as a guide for the execution of Vivaldi's unfigured Bass part. More detailed information on the performance practice is provided in the notes on interpretation by Gerhart Darmstadt which are based on contemporary sources.

A Song without Words for Violoncello Solo-Manfred Trojahn on the origin and title of his impressive virtuoso solo work:'Admittedly I do not know if he had seagulls but since Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg he will not have gone through life without at least the impression of the cry of seagulls. Nor do I know if seagulls played any part in his life in Rome. I myself was astonished when one or two years ago in the Villa Massimo I was not exactly annoyed but disturbed by the strong rhythmical cry of seagulls. I was just about to write a bassoon solo when the seagulls started. Then the idea came to me that precisely this sequence of notes could serve as the basis of the work. And the sequence for thebassoon solo is in turn the basis of the piece for violoncello - this is how titles are born... Of course the violoncello meanders with virtuosic ease from the seagull motif to the 'elf-like' skittering brought to music by Mendelssohn and used time and again in his compositions finally becoming a cabaletta. Now cabalettas are not very representative of Mendelssohn but as I was composing I definitely wanted to put a cabaletta in this passage. I am sure Mendelssohn and I will easily agree on this especially since later justice is done to him in the rapid passages and of course in the tonal cadenza at the very end which is more indicative of his time than of mine ... isn't it?'
