On the great feast days the Magnificat was given at the evening service in Leipzig following the sermon. Bach twice set this poem (Luke I 46-55). One of these compositions for solo soprano has been lost. Of the other Magnificat Bach composed his first version In E-flat with four inserted Christmas pieces prepared for the evening service that holiday 1723. His revision of 1728-31 In D Major omitting the Christmas movements was intended for use on any major feast day.Bach composed the motets for special occasions probably for the birthdays funerals or memorial services of prominent Leipzig citizens.In this edition five of the six motets are scored for acappella chouus: Nos. 1 2 4 and 5 for double chorus (SATB/SATB) No. 3 for various combinations of three- four- and five-part voices. Motet 6 is scored for SATB and continuo.

Matyas Seiber (1905-1960) was a Hungarian composer who lived and worked in the UK from 1935 onwards. He was born in Budapest and studied with Kodaly and toured the country to collect folk songs. Some ofthese were later published in 1949 as Three Hungarian Folk Songs with English words by A. L. Lloyd (1908-1982) a singer musicologist and self-styled ?Folklorist?.Three Hungarian FolkSongs have been arranged for TTBB Male Voice Choir by the composer Trevor Widdicombe. A Piano reduction is included for rehearsal purposes. The songs are individually titled: The Handsome Butcher - Apple Apple - The Old Woman.

A Roman War Song is a chorus from the opera Rienzi by Richard Wagner. It has been arranged here for TTBB Male Voice Chorus with Piano accompaniment by Percy E. Fletcher with thelyrics translated into English by George Ellerton.Rienzi was one of the composer’s earlier operas but remains one of his most popular. Structured in five acts it was written from 1838-1840 and firstperformed in 1842. The plot revolves around the life of revolutionary Cola di Rienzi who helps to overthrow the established nobility in Rome before the populace also turns against him.Richard Wagner(1813-1883) was a German composer best known for his operas most famously his Ring cycle. His complex textures and shifting tonality is sometimes seen as marking the birth of modern music.

Six Negro Spirituals have been arranged by Maurice Jacobson for TTBB Male Voice Choir. He studied composition with Charles VilliersStanford and Gustav Holst at the Royal College of Music before joining J. Curwen and Sons - a music publishing form that he remained with for almost fifty years eventually becoming director and chairman.
