From the composer: ?We have all experienced a noisy vehicle going by rapidly and hearing a raised pitch as the vehicle approaches and a lowered pitch as it recedes. This Doppler shift manifests itself in light, as well: light from stars approaching us has its frequency raised, shifting it to the blue end of the spectrum; light from receding stars is shifted to the red. Par COLERIDGE-TAYLOR SAMUEL. Danse Nègre, from the African Suite by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, arranged for flute choir by Paige Dashner Long. Coleridge spent his childhood in Croydon, Surrey, England, where he studied violin with his grandfather and also sang in the church choir. At 15, he was accepted to the Royal College of Music, where during his second year, he changed his major from violin to composition. At the age of 20, he met the African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, who encouraged him to focus on his African heritage. This piece describes the life of a river from inception to maturity. It begins with tenuous drops from melting ice, slowly forming into a brook that playfully dances around rocks and over bumps until it becomes a majestic and peaceful flow. The idyll is shattered by a raging waterfall, the erratic motion and anarchy and terror are gradually replaced by the exhilaration and then peace of motion and arrival. Mozart composed Cosi Fan Tutte in 1789, an opera buffa in two acts, premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna, Austria, on January 26, 1790. Antonin Dvorak?s symphonic poem Vodnik (The Water Goblin) was inspired by a poem penned by 19th century Czech poet Karel Jaromir Erben and consists of seven themes, representing characters in the poem. For Sophie Dufeutrelle Professor of Flute at the Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne an intense pedagogical activity goes hand in hand with composition an area in which she has received several commissions from esteemed soloists such as Maxence Larrieu and Philippe Bernold. Written in 2002 for a Flute Orchestra of around 20 instruments (from the Piccolo to the Octobass) Marine belongs to a tradition cherished by painters since the 16th century: the maritime landscape. The 1st movement (Mist) opens onto a lengthy section largely dedicated to improvisation in the spirit of Walter Thompson’s soundpainting: using fingermovements the conductor signs to the musicians the type of motif (calm sea swell whistling buoys seagulls and fishing boats) that will insert itself ad libitum between two lines of waves. The 2nd movement more traditional floats a Song of heartbreaking melancholy followed by a light lively Dance that swirls the heart into joyful eddies. Written for intermediate-level flautists (with one part reserved for beginners) this piece with its variety of atmospheres concludes on a high note – in the joy of making music together!

Flunk! can be played by 5 flutes with CD backing (fretless bass played by Daf Lewis) with or without the optional Alto Flute. The bass clarinet part is provided here for solely acoustic performances as an alternative to using the backing track. It is suggested that the flute players perform this work sitting in a traditional semicircle with two speakers behind them at head height. The speakers face the audience and the instrumentalists are carried by the backing. The flute players do not need any microphones.

Unlike most symphonies of that time, the symphony only consists of two movements, of which the Allegro moderato is the first movement.
