E-moll Op. 64-Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto op. 64 is a key work of the 19th century adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première; the ‘child prodigy’ Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Léonard a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known.As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the soloviolin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Léonard.The letter informs us that the composer invited Léonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Léonard.The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering they also show how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn’s approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter’s correspondence following their joint performance. In The Shadow Of The Bat - Concerto for Three Trombones and Orchestra by Niels Marthinsen (2009). Programme note: In the Shadow of the Bat is a triple concerto for three trombones and orchestra inspired by Batman and his enemies The Joker Two-Face and The Penguin. A central idea of modern versions of the Batman myth is that the batman is created by the fantastic villains that he fights and they are created by him - and that Batman is driven by revenge and hate barely held in check by an intense sense of justice. Batman represents 'the dark side' while the villains are hyper-imaginative colourful creative caracters who happen to be completely insane. The rivalry between soloists and orchestra is anything but friendly: The three soloists represent one villain each the orchestra 'is' the batman - and while the villains take centre stage during most of the concerto they are eventually overwhelmed by the sheer power of the orchestra and sent where they belong: The lunatic's asylum. The concerto begins with the creation of the batman: An eight year old boy persuades his parents to leave an opera performance before it is over; outside in an alley they are shot and killed by a criminal while the boy watches. And he decides that all criminals must be punished! Then follows the Villaineuos Fugue: a multi-part fugue-like exposition of villain motives and stylistic environments. It is the exposition of the joker (alto trombone) two-face (tenor trombone) and the penguin (bass trombone). And after a brief and very slow interlude where the three criminals form an alliance and make their plans the Toccata of Crime begins: Bright fast moving highly energetic expansive and colourful music still dominated by the soloists. But later the orchestra moves to centre stage with slow omnious swooping bat-music that climaxes as the soloists are defeated by the orchestra. In the Shadow of the Bat is commissioned

Symphony In Yellow for Violin Cello and Piano by Britta Byström (2002). Programme Note Leggiero Dolce Energico Symphony in Yellow for Piano Trio is structured as a “miniature symphony” in three movements. The slow middle movement is surrounded by two faster ones. The title is taken from a poem by Oscar Wilde in which various images that are all characterized by something yellow float by: a yellow bus yellow hay yellow leaves… During the composition of the work I searched for a certain mood or color of sound something “yellow” that shouldremain unchanged while different musical events in the work’s structure took place. I perceived my challenge to be akin to an artist painting different subjects using only one color. Howells wrote Penguinski for a visit made to the Royal College of Music in London on 10 May 1933. This score pays light and affectionate tribute to the considerable popularity of Stravinksy in London from the teens of the twentieth century. In Penguinski Howells creates a knockabout piece which shadowboxes Petrushka. Whilst underlining Howells's versatility the score gives a colourful insight into the prevailing influences of the time and is an intriguing example of how Stravinsky must have sounded to his English contemporaries.

The desire to make the storm audible was the starting point for a journey which morphed into many different other strange, close, and distant storms. Whistle Down The Wind Small Suite For Small Orchestra is three-movement suite Prelude The Three Kings Finale played as one continuous piece. Its melodic charm and instrumentation including vibraphone glockenspiel and chimes effectively evokes the innocence of the main characters of the film. Malcolm Arnold was a British composer who earned an international reputation both as a composer of serious works including nine symphonies and as a composer of light music. He composed more than one hundred film scores among them the Oscar-winning music for The Bridge on the River Kwai the award-winning music for The Inn of the Sixth Happiness and Hobson’s Choice. Malcolm said that his favourite film composition however was the one for Whistle Down the Wind.
