(+)
An influential early Romantic composer for piano John Field (1782-1837) redefined the term 'nocturne.' Field's dreamy poetic style exerted a lasting effect on such later composers as Chopin Liszt and Schumann. This collection brings together the most popular and often performed of Field's nocturnes along with a selection of his most important solo piano works.

The Three Nocturnes in this collection were selected because they are technically the easiest to play and they should be quite accessible to most intermediate students. For teachers who are looking for pathway literature to the Chopin Nocturnes these Three Nocturnes by Field are not only an excellent introduction to the romantic style but also masterworks in their own right.

The Nocturne was composed in 1827 and was published after Chopin?sdeath in 1855.In his book The Life and Death of Chopin Casimir Wierzyknski explains more about the history of the piece:?Up until then this form [the nocturne] had been the exclusive domain of John Field anIrish-born composer. But his Nocturne in E minor did not satisfy him [Chopin] and was published only posthumously.?This Henle Urtext Edition for solo Piano has been edited by Ewald Zimmermann and includes fingering byHans-Martin Theopold.

(+)
Fauré?s 13 Nocturnes form the most significant group of piano character pieces in his oeuvre. Despite their title which places them in the tradition of John Field and Frédéric Chopin Fauré here develops a genre all of his own. These are no dreamy scenes of the night but carefully structured iridescent pieces that alternate between lyrical elegance and passionate drama. Fauré composed the 6th Nocturne in 1894 while spending the summer at the house ofhis parents-in-law. With its strong contrasts of tempo metre and harmony it is by far the most significant and best-known of his Nocturnes. In a letter that he wrote after completing it Fauré wrote: ?Modern piano music that isa little interesting is an extremely rare thing? a state of affairs that seems to have been a good enough incentive for him to enrich the repertoire with his Nocturne op. 63!

With the five Nocturnes composed in 1919 Satie concluded the series of cyclically organized Piano pieces which in a way constitute the backbone of his oeuvre. As his models he chose the eponymouspieces by John Field and Frédéric Chopin borrowing not only the romantic elegiac inflections but also the tripartite form and rocking movement. Totally original in turn is the harmony which he devised according to his ownsystem.Commenting on his Nocturnes Satie once said: ?This is a different expression of myself?. Indeed the pieces which are not difficult to play seem unusually serious and far removed from thenonsense parody and cabaret atmosphere that colour such a large part of his oeuvre.

(+)

Bach transcriptions have always been popular for the musical brilliance of the Baroque master opens up a vast field, for composers and performers. Even the pianist and composer Emile Naoumoff who began his career at the age of 8, composed a piano concerto at the age of 10 and played it under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin is an expert and great admirer of Bach's music. The present edition contains no virtuoso 'fireworks music' but unites three slow, meditative pieces: 'O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß' (Orgelbüchlein), the aria 'Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben' (St. Matthew's Passion), and the arioso 'Betrachte, meine Seel', mit ängstlichem Vergnügen' (St. John's Passion), demanding from the performer the pianistic realisation of subtle polyphony and the development of a very refined sound./ Recueil / Piano
