Commissioned by the BBC to inaugurate Birmingham's Symphony Hall on 12 June 1991, the sense of optimism surrounding that event is exactly mirrored in Momentum's long melodic lines and vibrant rhythms, drawing themselves out at the last minute into a litany of orchestral gestures massively confirming the mood of communal pride and aspiration. Nothing could better reflect the sense of civic distinction than the ensemble giving that first concert, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, with whom Turnage was then Composer-in-Association.

Melodia for Solo Harp/ Alleluja Modo II - Wachet auf for Harp and Organ

This publication gathers together in these three pieces the only compositions by Santucci devoted to the harp, both as a solo instrument and in dialogue with the organ, his favourite instrument.
The little Melodia per arpa, a simple piece having an apparently didactic purpose, does not show the date of composition but, judging by the handwriting of the manuscript, it probably dates back to the period between 1980 and 1990. No other information has reached us as to why the piece was composed.
The two pieces Alleluja Modo II and Wachet auf, both dated 20 March 1993, composed for the unusual duo of harp and organ, are dedicated to Anna Maria Restani, first harp in the orchestra of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna from 1965 to 2002, and to her son Wladimir Matesic, organist and now teacher at the Conservatoire in Trieste. Gregorian chant is the protagonist of the first piece, evoking a Gothic and rarefied atmosphere. The second is instead a blatant tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach (right from the first bars the reference to Prelude no. 1 of the Well-Tempered Clavier is clear), through one of his most famous chorales (Wachet auf, ruft uns die stimme), also used by Santucci for numerous other compositions, including Il corteo dei Magi [for trumpet, organ, orchestra and choir, 1986, ms.], still performed in the Christmas concerts in Bologna.

Klezmer is van oorsprong de benaming voor de muziek van de Jiddisch sprekende joden in met name Oost-Europa. De klezmermuzikanten speelden onder meer dansmuziek op bruiloften. Van oudsher werden voornamelijk snaarinstrumenten alsde viool gebruikt. Later (na ca. 1900) kwam daar vooral de klarinet als melodie-instrument bij. In de klezmermuziek zijn naast veel Balkan-invloeden ook oriëntaalse en zigeunerinvloeden terug te vinden. In deze stijl componeerde Jacobde Haan Klezmania, waarin hij het bekende Hebreeuwse lied Hava Nagila verwerkte.

Mit Klezmer wurde ursprünglich die Musik der jiddisch sprechenden Juden in Osteuropa bezeichnet. Klezmer-Musiker spielten vornehmlich Tanzmusik auf Hochzeiten und Familienfeiern. In der oft zugleich fröhlichen und melancholischen Klezmer-Musik finden sich neben Anklängen der Musik des Balkans auch Einflüsse aus dem Orient und der Zigeunermusik. In diesem einzigartigen Stil komponierte Jacob de Haan sein Stück Klezmania, in welchem er das bekannte hebräische Lied Hava Nagila verwendete.

Bobobo or Borborbor (boh-boh’-boh) is a recreational piece performed at celebrations and festivals by the Ewe people of southeast Ghana. This area is called the Volta Region. Bobobo is performed in all sorts of social settings, including birth celebrations, communal events, school gatherings, or weddings. This arrangement for children's choir features two well-known Ghanaian (Ewe) songs: Duma Nya Me and Joy Like a River. With its catchy melody and interesting interplay between the parts, this arrangement is sure to be an instant hit with audiences and performers alike.
