This Southern Harmony tune is paired with two texts: a Triduum hymn and a hymn to the Holy Spirit. Nicely arranged for three mixed voices, the choral writing develops as the piece progresses through its three stanzas. This setting can be sung on Holy Thursday, and again with the alternate text on Pentecost—or the Sundays leading up to that feast.

Text Source: Matthew 11:28, 18:20, John 6:35, 1 Corinthians 10:16, 1 Peter 2:9–10, Psalm 23:5. Text by John McCann. Scripture: Matthew 11:28, Matthew 18:20, John 6:35, 1 Corinthians 10:16, 1 Peter 2:9–10, Psalm 23:5.
This gathering hymn is built around Matthew 11:28, “Come to me all you who are weary,†and Matthew 18:20, “Where two or three are gathered...†The unison refrain for assembly has a choral descant, and the verses all follow the attractive pattern of four measures of cantor solo over choral accompaniment, followed by four measures of full choir.

“A Purple Robe†will find use throughout Holy Week celebrations. The poignant text is a meditation on the passion and death of Christ. A dramatic piano part supports the anguish of the text. Generous use of unison and two-part texture makes the piece easier to learn in the midst of musical preparation for Holy Week and Easter.

For Percussion duo (not the concerto of the same title).
What determines the special character of a piece of music written for percussion instruments is the very choice of sets of instruments. InUdacrepAkubrad, I have chosen a similar set of instruments for each of the players: a marimba, two Darbuka, and a tom-tom. This piece draws its inspiration from the “Eastern†music, extending the boundaries of theregion as faras the Indian sub-continent. The main source materials in this piece are scales and the rhythms emanating from the traditional classical music of the peoples of the Mediterranean; and repetitive minimalism, from themusictradition of the Middle East, as well as the recently developed techniques in western music. — Avner Dorman

Atlantic Odyssey was commissioned by the band program at Oakton High School in Vienna, VA, and its director, Dr. Cheryl Newton. The piece is in two extended movements and seeks to portray an imaginary yacht journey off the eastern seaboard of the USA. The first movement, Sunrise at Sea and the Ocean Awakes, opens with an atmospheric depiction of dawn at sea. Floating woodwinds soar above surging brass until a climax heralds the rising sun. Daylight reveals distant horizons and the prospect of a calm voyage, but the sea is never tamed and a light breeze whips up spray around the boat until a couple of high waves rock the boat alarmingly. But the sea soon calms again and the journey continues serenely. The second movement, Homeward Bound and Spindrift, sees us turn for home, the boat scything calmly through the gentle waves in perfect sailing conditions. But once again conditions change, a stiff breeze tugs at the sails and for a moment we are once again at the mercy of the wind and waves. A moment of calm returns but we are suddenly sprayed by spindrift as a gale picks up. The boat is in danger of overturning but we manage to trim the sail and take advantage of the strong winds to enjoy and exhilarating journey home.

Wind, or the winds means view, folk songs, style and manner in Chinese. I used a western wind ensemble to sound the eastern feeling of the winds in my piece.
