(The Four Seasons)-Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands with Handel and J.S. Bach as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular he was without doubt the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works including forty-nine operas he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement Largo portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This new arrangement for brass band retains all the warmth of the original.

A feature for flugel and tenor horns based on the Passion Chorale-Cette mélodie intemporelle de Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) est devenue célèbre après avoir été intégrée dans la Passion selon saint Matthieu de Jean-Sébastien Bach dans des harmonisations particulièrement riches. Stephen Bullas highly descriptive work was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima which took place between the 19th February and 26th March 1945.Casualties on both the American and Japanese sides were horrendously high before the famous image of the raising of the flag on top of Mount Suribachi signalled the end of one of the most significant and terrifying Pacific conflicts of the SecondWorld War.The work received its first performance by the brass choir of the U.S. Marine Band at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. and is divided into four programmatic sections.The first portrays the sense of anticipation before conflict (Prologue) before the arduous journey to the scene of the battle (Approach by Sea) is followed by introspection and prayer featuring the hymn tune Melita (Chorale Prayer) andfinally the hostile confrontation itself (Engagement).There are frequent references to the Marines Hymn and the US National Anthem particularly in the closing bars depicting the ultimate raising of the American flag.

This splendid Christmas work gives you a three verse setting of the ancient melody In Dulci Jubilo which is generally associated with the text Good Christian Men Rejoyce. There is however a slight twist to this version in that each verse is a setting by three different composers covering over 300 years. The first setting is by the German composer Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) the second by JS Bach (1685-1750) and the third by the English romantic composer Sir John Stainer (1840 - 1901). The different verses are a fascinating study in the development of harmony and rhythmic style and give a brief glimpse into the personality and compositional styles of each composer.

Harmony Festival is Jan de Haan’s expression of his great respect for the composer of composers Johann Sebastian Bach. He has used the four note names which form the name of this composer as the basis of this piece. This four note motif provides us with the most beautiful and unexpected chord combinations creating a ‘festival of harmonies’!

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten-Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled ?Trostlied? literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach?s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan?s arrangement the choral is heard twice once alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time without interruption reflecting the composer?s original intention - a song of consolation.
