This work composed in 1878/79 alternates between chamber music intimacy and symphonic opulence and marks the beginning of a series of significant late works by César Franck. Its composition was partly prompted by the successfulperformance of Franck?s youthful piano trios at the ?Société nationale de musique? (founded in 1871) and probably also by a composition competition for works using this instrumental combination whose deadline Franck then went onto miss. The Quintet was received coolly at its first performance in January 1880 and it was performed just a few more times during the composer?s lifetime. It was only in the 20th century that audiences and critics came torecognise this work as a major milestone in the history of French chamber music and it now adorns the Henle catalogue in a new Urtext edition.

'Mr. Mozart Kapellmeister wishes to announce to the most worthy public the appearance in print of three of his recently contrived Piano concertos. These three concertos may be performed not only with a large Orchestra including wind instruments but also a quattro that is with two Violins one Viola and Violoncello. They will be issued early in April of this year (1783).'As this advertisement shows it was Mozart's intention to keep the accompaniment part flexible in his Piano concertos K.413-5 and as we know from a letter Mozart wrote to his father in K.449 as well. In addition to orchestral forces it is also possible to use achamber setting with string instruments one to a part. This chamber music edition accommodates this option thereby enriching Mozart's charming chamber music with Piano.These editions of Mozart's Piano Concertos are based on the Urtext editions published in the New Mozart Edition. In the present arrangement for two Pianos the solo part - as well as the strings - are unchanged and thus identical with the version in the NMA. Opus 15. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Dans la foulée de sa Première sonate pour violon, Fauré composa, avec le Quatuor pour piano et cordes op. 15, une nouvelle grande ?uvre de musique de chambre. Cette pièce d?une fraîcheur toute juvénile rencontra lors de sa création en février 1880, un large assentiment. Peu de temps après, des amis émirent toutefois quelques réserves à l?encontre du dernier mouvement. Après un temps de réflexion de trois ans, Fauré élabora un tout nouveau Finale. Avec ce nouveau mouvement conclusif, l?Opus 15 trouva rapidement le chemin des salles de concerts; il est aujourd?hui considéré comme l?une des ?uvres de musique de chambre française les plus significatives et populaires du dix-neuvième siècle finissant. Par MUSTONEN OLLI. The first movement of my Piano Quintet is filled with drama and passion. Its atmosphere can be related to my Second Symphony Johannes Angelos. The second movement is a set of polyphonic variations in a form reminiscent of a passacaglia. The music seems to be hypnotized by a theme consisting of a chromatic cluster of ten notes. In the beginning of the last movement, materials from the previous movements start to reappear, but this time in a mysterious, incoherent way. The strings find new music resembling a fragmented hymn.
