Geoffrey Burgon's Six Studies were originally composed for solo cello. This transcription, authorised by the composer, has involved some changes in register and notes due to the different timbres and response of the viola and the considerable difference in physical size of the two instruments. This work was commissioned by the Portsmouth Festival with funds provided by Southen Arts. The first performance was given by Julian Lloyd Webber at the Cathedral Church of Old Portsmouth in June 1980.

This set of two related pieces was originally written for solo cello and takes its title from the poem Man of Assynt by Norman MacCaig. It was written for Robert Irvine as part of his UNICEF solo cello project in 2015, and was premiered by him on 22nd October 2016 in Migvie Church, Aberdeen.A Litany requires a tuning-fork, preferably one with tubular limbs rather than those with square edges. The player is required to change from arco to the tuning-fork and back, a transition covered by l.h. pizz. open strings, which can be repeated ad lib. during the change. For the tuning-fork tremolo passages, the two prongs of the fork are scissors either side of the portion of string. The concertos in A minor, B flat major and A major were first written as violoncello concertos between 1750 and 1753. They thus rank among the very first concertos for solo cello in Germany. The A minor Concerto, composed in 1750, is performed quite frequently today. C. P. E. Bach most likely wrote the Concerto in B flat major Wq. 171 as the last of the little work group in 1753 in Potsdam, at the court of King Frederick the Great. He reworked the composition for flute and harpsichord shortly thereafter. Various sources prove that copies of the work had made it known quite extensively in the second half of the 18th century. In his new Urtext edition, Ulrich Leisinger bases himself on two reliable manuscripts.
