As the Saxophone is commonly associated with the jazz style classical music for the instrument had always been lacking. Therefore when Paul Bonneau (1918-1995) composed his Deux Caprices En Formed De Valse for Alto Saxophone and Piano it was well-received by performers of the genre. Bonneau's composition was highly versatile ranging from over fifty film scores operettas songs and other pieces for Saxophone including a concerto. The Deux Caprices En Formed De Valse however were particularly acclaimed for their use of advanced techniques. The works contains typically French characteristicsincluding chromaticism and difficult technical passages. All these elements combined make for an enjoyable and challenging piece for saxophonists.

It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996. In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from the composer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with sonic effects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso Saxophonists. Composed in 1989-90 the Sonata is elaborate and quirky and successfully exploits many extended techniques on the instrument. Born in Prague Feld (1925-2007) studied Violin and Viola with his parents before studying at the Conservatory and Academy of Music of his native city. His compositions predominantly instrumental soon became popular being performed all over the world. As reflected in his Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czechmusical tradition but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of four movements 1. Allegro ritmico 2. Adagio/Bells of liberty 3. Allegro vivo/Scherzo and 4. Allegro con fuoco. Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges from fast staccato semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical slurred passages. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced saxophonists.

Six Pieces by Fritz Kreisler Transcribed for Alto Saxophone and Piano. Fritz Kreisler (1875?1962) was celebrated as one of the greatest violinists of all time. His brilliant technique and rich tone produced a characteristic sound that was and remains immediately identifiable. This collection features six pieces that Kreisler composed or transcribed for violin and piano, here transcribed for alto saxophone and piano. Especially well known are the original pieces Liebesleid and Schon Rosmarin, both of which Kreisler attributed to the now-forgotten composer Joseph Lanner. Caprice Viennois and Rondino on a Theme of Beethoven are likewise original pieces from early in Kreisler?s career, which he would regularly feature as concert encores. The Old Refrainand Midnight Bells are transcriptions, the former of a Viennese popular song and the latter of an excerpt from the operetta Der Opernball by Richard Heuberger. German baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist becoming a composer against his family's wishes. However his musical career saw him hold important positions and to this day he remains a major composer. Pierre Lantier (1910-1998) won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1937 and is remembered for a variety of works most significantly his Sicilienne for Alto Saxophone and Piano. Lantier's Sicilienne is particularly useful in learning elegance and a flowing musicality. The varying styles tempos dynamics and rhythms throughout create an appealing work to performers and listeners alike. The stylistic nuances of Lantier's piece along with the evocative melodies make for a graceful work well worth performing as an intermediate to advanced level saxophonist.
