This new collection of folk songs - 'Laula kultani' (Finnish for 'Sing, my sweetheart') - offers choirs attractive literature to expand their repertoires and to perform concerts for many different occasions. The creative choral director has many possibilities for performing this music: thus instruments can be added, or - if there are difficulties due to pronouncing a foreign language - a small ensemble can sing the song, while the remainder of the choir hums the music in the background. The selected songs about themes of love and love's sorrow, dance, festival and celebration, are traditional folksongs which are well-known and popular in the countries of their origin. In puttingtogether this collection special emphasis has been placed on the musical quality of the settings. The Black Knight (Op.25) is a secular cantata for chorus and orchestra composed in 1893. It takes its text from a poem from H. W. Longfellow which is itself a translation of a poem in German by Ludwig Uhland. The choral parts act as a backing to the orchestra showing how Elgar was developing his orchestration techniques and talents although this development went unnoticed until the sudden success of the Enigma Variations in 1899. Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England’s best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer coming from outside the musical and social establishment which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.

Imogen Holst 1907-84 was a much-loved source of inspiration for countless musicians and students who encountered her over the years of her involvement with the Dartington Summer School of Music and the Aldeburgh Festival.This book conveys her infectious enthusiasm and insight as a choral conductor. Here she sets out clearly and concisely a wealth of practical information on the physical business of conducting which will be of particular value to the amateur conductor. She deals with the forming and training of a choir the presentation and rehearsal of the music and how to approach public performances and competitions. Her final chapter gives adviceon the rehearsal of specific choruses by Purcell Handel and Britten.Originally published in 1973 this edition has been corrected and updated by Lowinger Maddison Archivist for the Holst Foundation.
