Beethoven’s York’scher Marsch is one of a collection of three tattoos (WoO 18-20) and has had a chequered history to say the least. There are several autograph copies for different instrumentations dedicated to different archdukes who were commanders of various regiments of the army including the Prussian regiment called Marsch des Yorkschen Corps which is how its current title arose. Philip Sparke’s arrangement enables a march by this major classical composer to be enjoyed by concert bands.

The beautiful 2nd movement from the Grande Sonate Pathétique (Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13) de Beethoven may well be one of the most delightful solo piano pieces ever and, over the years, has been arranged for many line-ups. In this arrangement, Georges Moreau wanted to stay as close to the original as possible by giving the passionate aspect of the melody absolute priority. The very discreet accompaniment enhances this effect beautifully.

This youth movement ‘Fridays for Future’ was inspired by the Swedish student Greta Thunberg and helps everybody to think about the future for us and our children. Young people are important for the future of our music bands too. Wind bands can play a significant part in children’s social and musical lives and are an ideal way to initiate cooperation between primary schools and the local community. Children for a New World is a good way to integrate class bands into local wind bands and provides a unique opportunity to perform in a larger ensemble. Accompanied by a youth or adult band or even both the class band will be at the centre of the performance.In Children for a New World you may recognise fragments from Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 ‘From the New World’. A powerful work for the symphonic band, Ode To The Spirit Of Man is based on thematic material taken from the 4th movement of Beethoven?s Symphony No. 9 and developed into a fantasy of kaleidoscopic nature. The opening is a joyful expression of the spirit of freedom and is based on the composer?s own themes derived from Beethoven?s music. Throughout the work various themes from the symphony are interwoven, including Alla Marcia, Scherzo, Andante maestoso and finally the uplifting Ode to Joy.
