Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. Dieses Werk wurde im Auftrag der Concert Band Vlamertinge geschrieben und ist ein Plädoyer an den Frieden: Der Titel bedeutet dann auch ‘Frieden auf Erden’. Dies kommt unter anderem im vokalen Anteil der Ausführenden zum Ausdruck. An verschiedenenStellen des Werkes erklingen, anfangs durcheinander dann zu einem rhythmischen und strukturierten Synchrongesang vereint, die Worte ‘Et In Terra Pax’ wie ein flehendes Gebet für den Frieden. Ein pentatonisches Thema formt den Anfang dieses Werkes, basierend auf den Noten D, E, G, A, und C, die dem Namen: ‘ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtingE’ und dem Namen des Dirigenten NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe entstammen. Während der orchestralen Klimax, die zu einemersten Klangausbruch führt (ab Takt 62), entsteht eine etwas traurige Melodie. Plötzlich werden dann die Eingangstakte wiederaufgenommen, wenn auch mit einer veränderten Klangfarbe; die Worte ‘Et In Terra Pax’ runden den ersten Teil daraufhin ab. Esfolgt ein unruhiges Allegro, das überraschend durch eine Choralartigen Passage voller Ruhe unterbrochen wird. Eine Sprechstimme liest währenddessen das Gedicht Sonnet des jungen Dichters Charles Hamilton Sorley vor, der im ersten Weltkriegfiel. Es findet für die Grausamkeit und Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges die passenden Worte. Nachdem das Allegro, diesmal mit einigen Ausbreitungen, wiederholt wird, kehrt die weite, beinahe unendliche Atmosphäre des Beginns wieder zurück. Klarinettenspielen zusammen mit einem Englischhorn das pentatonische Eingangsthema ein letztes Mal in ausgebreiteter Fassung, wobei das “Et In Terra Pax’ durch den Rest des Orchesters stets wiederholt wird. Der Komponist hat bewusst auf jegliche Form der Aggression oder bombastischen Vertonung, die in so vielen Werken über den Krieg zu finden ist, vermieden. Dennoch ist die Angst vor Gewalt und Zerstörung vor allem in den Allegro-Passagen deutlich zuhören und zu fühlen. Am Ende macht die anfängliche Spannung jedoch der Hoffnung Platz: Möge die Friedlichkeit auch im täglichen Leben die Grausamkeit verbannen… / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). Par BRUCKNER ANTON / DOSS THOMAS (Arr.). Anton Bruckner (b. 4.9.1824, Ansfelden, d. 11.10.1896, Vienna) didn?t have it easy. Throughout his life, the Austrian composer was plagued by self-doubt. Anton Bruckner came from a simple, rural background. After the death of his father, he was accepted as a choirboy at the monastery of Sankt Florian in 1837. After several years as a school assistant and his own organ and piano studies, he first worked as organist in St. Florian, then from 1855 as cathedral organist in Linz. Introduced to music theory and instrumentation by Simon Sechter and Otto Kitzler, he discovered Richard Wagner as an artistic role model, whom he admired throughout his life and also visited several times in Bayreuth. In 1868 Anton Bruckner became professor of basso continuo, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory; ten years later court organist; and in 1891 finally honorary doctor of the University of Vienna. He was considered an important organ virtuoso of his era, but had to wait a long time for recognition as a composer. It was not until Symphony No.7 in E major, composed between 1881 and 1883, with the famous Adagio written under the effects of Wagner's death, that he achieved the recognition he had hoped for, even if he was reluctant to accept it given his inclination towards scepticism and self-criticism. Anton Bruckner was a loner who did not want to follow a particular school or doctrine. He composed numerous sacred vocal works, such as his three masses, the Missa Solemnis in B flat minor (1854), the Te Deum (1881-84) and numerous motets. As a symphonic composer, he wrote a total of nine symphonies and many symphonic studies from 1863 onwards, tending to revise completed versions several times over. Bruckner's orchestral works were long considered unplayable, but in fact were merely exceptionally bold for the tonal language of their time, uniting traditions from Beethoven through Wagner to folk music, on the threshold between late Romanticism and Modernism. Anton Bruckner composed about 40 motets during his lifetime, the earliest a setting of Pange lingua around 1835, and the last, Vexilla regis, in 1892. Thomas Doss has compiled some of these motets in this volume for symphonic wind orchestra. These motets show many characteristics of personal expression, especially Bruckner's colourful harmony in the earlier works, which is in places aligned with Franz Schubert (changes between major and minor; and movements in thirds). Later works are characterised by many components which, in addition to the expanded stature of the movements, include above all a sense of the instrumentation as an outward phenomenon and the harmony as a compositional feature that works more internally. Some aspects of Bruckner's work are the result of his long period of study, which familiarised him not only with the tradition of his craft, but also gave him insights into the 'modernity' of his time in such composers as Wagner, Liszt and Berlioz. Par DE HAAN JAN. Jan de Haan a composé Hispaniola pour célébrer le 500e anniversaire de la mort de Christophe Colomb (1451-1506). Né en Italie, le jeune Christophe Colomb s’installa à Lisbonne. De là, il entreprit ses voyages découverte vers l’Afrique et ailleurs. Adhérent à la thèse que la Terre est ronde, il décida de rejoindre l’Asie (Les Indes orientales) en navigant par l’Ouest. En 1492, il embarqua avec une petite flotte battant pavillon espagnol. Après deux mois de navigation, il découvrit les premières îles dans la mer des Caraïbes. Persuadé d'avoir atteint l'Asie, Colomb baptisa ces nouvelles terres « Les Indes » et les hommes qui les peuplent « les Indiens ». Étonné par laressemblance de certains paysages avec l'Espagne, il donna le nom d'Española (Petite Espagne) à l’une des îles (aujourd’hui Haïti et la République dominicaine). Ce nom fut ensuite latinisé en 'Hispaniola'. Hispaniola est une oeuvre en trois mouvements sans interruption. Le premier mouvement illustre la préparation du voyage. La précision qui caractérise la musique alterne de manière répétitive avec la décontraction d’une atmosphère typiquement espagnole. Le deuxième mouvement d’allure vive est rempli de surprises rythmiques. Nous suivons Colomb dans son long, imprévisible et dangereux périple en mer. Terre en vue !, la cloche du bateau s’ébranle. Nous entrons dans le troisième mouvement. Durant la longue exposition du thème, les côtes semblent s’élever lentement de la mer. Puis vient l’euphorie de la découverte de la nouvelle terre. Par SATIE ERIK / DE MEIJ JOHAN (Arr.). Le compositeur Erik Satie, né en 1866 à Honfleur (Normandie), est l’une des personnalités les plus frappantes de l’histoire de la musique française. Son œuvre est fort variée. Il a non seulement écrit de petites pièces légères et agréables, mais il a également composé des œuvres très sérieuses dont les trois ballets Parade, Relâche et Les Aventures de Mercure. Ce sont surtout ces œuvres pour piano, telles Trois Gymnopédies ou Gnossiennes qui ont atteint une grande notoriété. Satie a collaboré avec pratiquement tous les grands artistes de l’époque dont Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Serge Diaghilev et Georges Braque, ainsi que les compositeurs Darius Milhaud (le Groupe des Six) et Claude Debussy. Par DE HAAN JACOB. The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one, and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion, ” which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together. ” In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals. ” His vision is rejected, and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury, ” and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep, ” they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In the second movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world. ” Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast, which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. She then populates the earth by giving birth to an enormous race. Spanish Flea, écrit par Julius Wechter en 1967 pour le célèbre trompettiste et chef d’orchestre Herb Alpert, est une mélodie qui a déjà fait plusieurs fois le tour du monde. On entendra le thème dans plusieurs dessins animés tel que Les Simpsons, ou autres films comme Le Flic de Beverly Hills. Le motif principal de ce passage d’ouverture fait référence à Big Ben, remarque touchante pour mieux installer le décor d'une scène typiquement britannique. L'agitation des futurs passagers s'exprime par des sections polyrythmiques. Le premier thème aux accents héroïques dérivé du motif Big Ben est exposé. La trame devient plus constante, fluide, répétitive, symbole du doux départ du célèbre palais flottant. Le tableau suivant est une aquarelle riche en couleurs ; motifs ascendants et descendants rappellent le voyage en haute mer. On entend lesenfants jouer, le Capitaine Smith donner des ordres. On perçoit aussi les différences d’atmosphère entre les ponts de première et deuxième classes ; la pression ronflante des moteurs. Tout est présent dans cette fresque musicale. On entend surtout l'accélération des moteurs suite à un ordre du Capitaine soumis à la pression de l'armateur. Faisant suite à un accelerando, le piccolo et la percussion font écho d'un signal en morse provenant d'un autre bateau qui prévient d'un danger immédiat : la proximité d'un iceberg. Hélas, ce message est ignoré et les moteurs continuent de tourner à plein régime jusqu'au moment fatidique où le Titanic heurte l'iceberg. Le motif plaintif du saxophone, accompagné de trilles des clarinettes, traduit l'arrêt des moteurs après la collision. La percussion marque le tristement célèbre S. O. S. en code morse : trois points, trois traits, trois points. Les passagers sont pris de panique. Finalement, nous assistons au lent naufrage du paquebot. Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting 'Pacific Dreams' Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of 'Pacific Dreams', he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific. Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti. Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his 'Pacific Dreams'. Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? Cascadia Suite est une promenade musicale aérienne au-dessus des montagnes majestueuses, des lacs et cours d’eau d’une pureté cristalline et des paysages grandioses de la côte Pacifique Nord-Ouest du continent nord-américain. Le titre de l’oeuvre s’inspire de la célèbre chaîne montagneuse des Cascades. La région qui l’entoure abonde en panoramas époustouflants, forêts pluviales luxuriantes et paysages enchanteurs. Le premier mouvement, intitulé Cascadia, dépeint le décor côtier face à la mer avec des vues spectaculaires des îles-Gulf et des îles San Juan. Les dauphins s’amusent dans les vagues et les oiseaux volent dans le ciel. La vie sauvageest abondante. Le second mouvement porte le nom d’un petit bout de fôret magnifique situé sur l’île de Vancouver, Cathedral Grove (La forêt cathédrale). À travers ce charmant poème symphonique, vous découvrirez quelques-uns des plus vieux et plus grands arbres du monde. Le climat musical illustre à merveille l’atmosphère particulière qui émane de ce site exceptionnel.
