Tout d’abord, le prélude Au matin, extrait de Peer Gynt - Suite n° 1 du maître norvégien Edvard Grieg, puis la mélodie du très original Norwegian Wood des Beatles. Cette ballade acoustique signée John Lennon figure sur l’album Rubber Soul (1965). Il existe plusieurs hypothèses sur le sens probable du titre de la chanson. Quoiqu’il en soit, le titre de cet arrangement s’explique tout simplement par l’origine des deux mélodies constitutives de la trame musicale. Les deux thèmes s’alternent, se suivent et s’imbriquent pour former un ensemble évident. Composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875, music from Peer Gynt was originally incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's five-act play. The beautiful Solveig's Song is from the second orchestral suite later extracted by Grieg. Johnnie's tender setting opens with a lyric theme scored for the trumpet section. A brief andante section features the woodwinds before returning to the opening melody this time richly scored for full band. A beautiful work for teaching lyric style playing.

The melodies harmonies moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt (1875). He wrote many collections of folk music for piano and these two tunes come from his 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances op. 17.
