Of Elgar's five Pomp and Circumstance Marches the first in D is the best known as it includes Land of Hope and Glory. The origin of the title of these marches is a speech in Shakespeare's 'Othello':O now for ever/ Farewell the tranquil mind! farewell content!/ Farewell the plumed troops and the big wars/ That makes ambition virtue!/ O farewell!/ Farewell the neighing steed and the shrill trump / The spirit-stirring drum th' ear-piercing fife / The royal banner and all quality / Pride pomp and circumstance of glorious war! This arrangement has been made to make it more accessible to the average orchestra; the instruments marked with an asterisk in the orchestrationlist above may be omitted if necessary.Duration: 6 minutes OrchestrationPiccolo 2 Flutes 2 Oboes 2 Clarinets in A or Bb Bass clarinet* 2 Bassoons 2 Horns in F 2 Trumpets in Bb 3 Trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion (Snare drum Triangle Bass drum Cymbals) Strings (Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola Cello Bass) (* = instruments optional)

(+)
According to his dating of the autograph Haydn composed the Symphony no. 89 in F major in 1787 just one year after the six so-called Paris symphonies. It was written together with its sister work the G-major Symphony no. 88 for the violinist Johann Tost who sold it to the Parisian publisher Sieber. In both works Haydn continues the compositional achievements of the Paris symphonies: mastery of orchestration richness of musical ideas and details and an idiosyncratic multicoloured use of the wind section (which still makes do without Clarinets). In contrast to the buoyant G-major symphony the F-major symphony possesses a ratherpastoral sweet character which in parts can nevertheless soar to dramatic heights. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans both present and future.

Uses: General Ascension Christ the King EastertideScripture: Psalm 47The poetic imagery of this Psalm makes it usable not only as a general anthem but also for Ascension Eastertide or Christ theKing Sunday. The festive brass and percussion parts added to the organ make this an anthem of great impact. Mixed meter sections dance with more lyric passages as the anthem develops and a very special “wall of sound”section is an outstanding moment of choral virtuosity. We are proud to now offer this proven winner for men's voices! Score and Parts (tpt 1-2 hn tbn tba timp) available as a Printed Edition.

In The Shadow Of The Bat - Concerto for Three Trombones and Orchestra by Niels Marthinsen (2009). Programme note: In the Shadow of the Bat is a triple concerto for three trombones and orchestra inspired by Batman and his enemies The Joker Two-Face and The Penguin. A central idea of modern versions of the Batman myth is that the batman is created by the fantastic villains that he fights and they are created by him - and that Batman is driven by revenge and hate barely held in check by an intense sense of justice. Batman represents 'the dark side' while the villains are hyper-imaginative colourful creative caracters who happen to be completely insane. The rivalry between soloists and orchestra is anything but friendly: The three soloists represent one villain each the orchestra 'is' the batman - and while the villains take centre stage during most of the concerto they are eventually overwhelmed by the sheer power of the orchestra and sent where they belong: The lunatic's asylum. The concerto begins with the creation of the batman: An eight year old boy persuades his parents to leave an opera performance before it is over; outside in an alley they are shot and killed by a criminal while the boy watches. And he decides that all criminals must be punished! Then follows the Villaineuos Fugue: a multi-part fugue-like exposition of villain motives and stylistic environments. It is the exposition of the joker (alto trombone) two-face (tenor trombone) and the penguin (bass trombone). And after a brief and very slow interlude where the three criminals form an alliance and make their plans the Toccata of Crime begins: Bright fast moving highly energetic expansive and colourful music still dominated by the soloists. But later the orchestra moves to centre stage with slow omnious swooping bat-music that climaxes as the soloists are defeated by the orchestra. In the Shadow of the Bat is commissioned

The twelve ?London Symphonies? comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn?s symphonic ?uvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Hailing from 1791 the Symphony in D major no. 96 numbers among the first symphonies written in and for London. The epithet given to it by posterity ?The Miracle? was bestowed erroneously for the miracle ? that no one was injured when a chandelier fell during a concert ? took place during a performance of a different Haydn symphony. And yet it is a miracle of musical esprit nonetheless from the subtlerelations between the motives consisting of broken triads that open all four movements to the virtuosic shifts in mood owing to surprising harmonies Haydn here submits a prime example of how he develops musical ideas. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Poul Ruders' Handel Variations for Orchestra (2009) -Ninety Symphonic Reflections on Eight Bars by Georg Friedrich Handel.Commissioned by and dedicated to the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in celebration of their 75th anniversary 2010. Premiered by The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra conducted by Giancarlo Andretta at the Aarhus Concert Hall 14 January 2010. Programme noteThe short feisty Bourrée from Handel´s famous Water Music (First Suite in F major) has for some years been hovering at the back of my mind as possessing the perfectpotential for a series of variations. Not unlike the short 'morsel' by Henry Purcell (the witches Ho-ho-ho-chorus from the opera Dido and Aeneas) which kicks off the ten variations of my orchestral work Concerto in Pieces the music per se is not particularly interesting but it nevertheless grows on you and is difficult to get rid of. It is merely a handful of sequences (a technique much used in the Baroque era - a method in which the same motif is being shifted up and down in a specified order). Actually it is only the first eight bars of the Bourrée which I haul through the wringer. It would be obvious to assume that Handel Variations make up a sequel to Concerto in Pieces but in spite of the similarity in character between the two chosen themes the Handel Variations are far more symphonically coherent. There are no less than ninety (!) variations and each variation (they are relatively short ranging from four up to forty-something bars) runs seamlessly into the next creating a huge symphonic body of constantly changing colours. I set out with the original theme without interfering but the 'erosion' begins to gnaw away at the theme already from the first variation. Imagine a vast gallery of Handel portraits in which Georg Friedrich appears at first fully recognizable but then the 'disfiguration' sets in and

A draughtsman is commissioned by a landowner in the late 17th century to make 12 drawings of his property. Every note of the score was derived from the music of Purcell and was written for the Michael NymanBand. This concert suite which was made in 2001 and first performed in Hanover was specially revised for an all-Nyman concert given by the composer and the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall Londonin June 2003. (+)
The solo group consists of a sextet of the woodwind instruments which are normally doubled with more regular members of the orchestra: these six strangers now brought to the fore are piccolo alto flute cor anglais clarinet inEb bass clarinet in Bb and contrabassoon. They make a motley group diverse in colour as in register and one of the tasks of the piece sets itself is to have them blend and cohere both together as an ensemble and in partnershipwith the string orchestra (which itself is used with unusual variety and subtlety). Another evident task of the work is to provide fine solos for each member of the woodwind sextet: bright dances for the piccolo recitativesfor the alto flute a stoical song from the contrabassoon in the extreme bass. The work is cast as a single movement which begins in the composer's first-movement style of rapid regeneration. This is interrupted by slowinterventions including one for divided strings which gives rise to a sextuple cadenza for the soloists. Out of this comes a slow movement or sequence of short slow movements followed by a dancing finale with its own slowepisodes. Altogether this is music of songs and dances heavily tinged with Scottish rhythms and tonalities: one might think of a magic bagpipe having six chanters and a drone of variegated string texture.

Commissioned jointly for Colin Currie by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. First performance on 14th May 2008 at Symphony Hall Birmingham by Colin Currie (percussion) and the City ofBirmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins.NOTE FOR PERFORMANCEIn table top the unpitched solo percussion part in the 9th movement the scoring was initially left open. The present full score showsa suggested instrumentation which was devised by Colin Currie in conjunction with the composer. Soloists should attempt to match the timbres used but should not feel constrained by the exact choice ofinstruments.COMPOSER’S NOTEThe percussion instruments used in a table of noises in some ways represent the odd things that were on my great uncle Ash’s parlour table that fascinated me as a child. There is even abottle; there was always a milk bottle with the silver top pushed in surrounded by other essentials for his life. From birth he was quite severely handicapped in one of his legs and couldn’t walk too far without his trusty crutch. He kept everything he needed within arm’s length. In the list of instruments for the solo part there’s everything from deep log drum sounds to very high metallic chime sounds. Wood glass metal and a whistle. Mostlysmall-scale things with a large gong behind used sparingly. I think that we managed to keep below 30 instruments in all which I was keen to do. I didn’t want scores of things that are only played once they have to earn theirkeep. I didn’t want to use a marimba but thought that trying to make the xylophone sound in a more expressive way would be more of a challenge. The percussionist sits for much of the time on a Cajon a flamenco instrument which isessentially a wooden box. The player hits the front of the box in various ways rather as you play a conga. There are guitar strings inside and bells to add to the overall colour. I would like to thank Colin Currie for the

The viewpoint taken on a philosophical level is chiefly inspired by the brilliant thinker and philosopher of time J.F. Fraser. The main conclusion of his investigation of the subject is in very short that the onlyadequate view to take of time as a phenomenon with all the knowledge that we have today is that time must be seen as a conflict or at least an interference between many different “temporal levels” (...) Chorale (2001 02) for orchestra is a kind of musical meditation on the chorale Es ist genug from Bach?s cantata O Ewigkeit du Donnerwort itself a harmonisation of J R Ahle?s 1662 hymn. Nick Kimberley?s preface outlines the context of the Bach original and refers to Alban Berg?s use of the chorale in his Violin Concerto almost 300 years later. In contrast to both of these works Lindberg?s Chorale has no extra-musical agenda. The composer explains that he took the harmonic structure of the chorale and embedded it in his own harmonies. ?I make an analogy with the rise and fall of the tide. When the tide is in the sea-bed is invisible; but when the tidegoes out you see the rock formation on the sea-bed.?Tribute is a short show-piece for full orchestra composed in 2004 as a gift to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Esa-Pekka Salonen?s debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

(+)
Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995 as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra'sfestival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence for example in ornamental figuresand in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems toaccelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and thesuspension of the harmonies in the final climax which can make one think of Mahler and Berg or Lindberg's grand predecessor and compatriot Sibelius. This is the Score published by Chester Music; the duration of thepieces is approximately 16 minutes.

(+)
In the early years of our century when vital new forces were revolutionising the arts Russian-born Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) was one of the visionary pioneers who sought a new musical language. At least a full decade before the advances of Stravinsky and Schoenberg Scriabin had begun the process of a complete break with all musical conventions. By 1905 he was immersed in a search for a way to express in sound the mystical and theosophical ideas obsessed him. Scriabin’s last two orchestral works were the products of a virtual delirium of composing. Simultaneously refining his poem called Poem of Ecstasy andcompleting the symphony that grew out of it (and shared its name) Scriabin never forgot the rapture of composing this work about creation and self-fulfilment: “I gasp for breath but oh what bliss! The very meter kindles the meaning…” Prometheus: Poem of Fire – Scriabin’s last and most revolutionary symphony – portrays Man’s epic journey from the mists of beginning time to a wonderous self-realisation given the gift of fire and light to make creative vision possible. Massively scored Prometheus incorporates a “colour Organ” to bathe the performance space in a vast interplay of coloured lights. For the music professional and every student of composition orchestration and conducting both scores are strikingly original and instructive. Equally fascinating are Scriabin’s approach to composition the extraordinary sonorities of his orchestra and his fanciful often supercharged performance instructions that replace conventional words for tempo mood and expression.

o.Op. 82 TrV 133- We are grateful to the University of Edinburgh Library Centre for Research Collections for providing us with access to a manuscript of this work. At shelf-mark Mus.M.645 is a set of parts in the hand of an unknown copyist annotated by John Parr (the bassoonist of Sheffield) who also wrote a full score and second copies of the bassoon and bass parts. The score is dated 1930 and the bassoon part 1934. It is here entitled merely 'duet for flute and bassoon with orchestra' and ascribed to R. Strauss. We are also grateful for advice from Dr Christian Wolf of the Richard-Strauss-Institut in Munich whohave access to a copy of 'der Zweikampf' made by Cl. Schubert but the Richard-Strauss-Archiv in Garmisch-Partenkirchen will not permit them to make a complete copy for us but has permitted sample pages to be copied confirming the identity of the music. They also affirm the considerable doubt as to Richard Strauss being the composer however no other composer has been suggested in his stead. In the Strauss bibliography a date of composition of 1884 is given when he was twenty years old. We would also like to acknowledge with thanks the help of Drs Jenny Nex and Lance Whitehead of Edinburgh in deciphering the manuscript and advising on the piano reduction. In editing the work we have corrected a few evident errors and made the dynamics consistent. There was no given tempo indication in some of the parts but Parr added 'allegro moderato' which is also the tempo indication in the Munich manuscript. He also suggested the bass pizzicato in most of the polacca but perhaps this was intended only for the double bass should one be present. There are some discrepancies between the Edinburgh score and parts which we have resolved somewhat arbitrarily on musical grounds. The differences between the Munich and Edinburgh versions are mostly small as far as we can discern; the

Along with Swan Lake The Nutcracker represents one of Tchaikovsky's most popular and most-performed works. Based on E.T.A. Hoffman's The Nutcracker And The Mouse King the piece was commissioned in 1891 and first performed in St Petersberg the following year. The story of enchanted toys and Christmas magic has become a firm favourite and the piece was the first historically to make orchestral use of the Celesta. As a work of previously unrivalled orchestration the piece has become vital reading for those studying the development of the orchestra or important Romantic works.

New Version 1994-Symphony No. 6 was created in the late 1960s and was first performed in Havana on 26. November 1969 by the Cuban National Orchestra under my direction. This symphony reflects not only the excited atmosphere of awakening during those years but also my efforts to include in the composition the large number of new human and artistic stimuli that I experienced at that time. So the banjo starts to play a Vietnamese song of freedom (Stars in the Night) later the first bars of Mikis Theodorakis hymn of freedom is heard. The second movement is based on the poem Fe de erratas (errata sheet) by Miguel Barnet. In the original version the three parts of the symphony merge withoutinterruption. In the revised version I separated them to make it easier for the audience to register the caesuras which are also internal caesuras as regards content. Apart from strengthening the string sound the most significant alternation in comparison to the first version is that I fully composed all of the aleatoric passages and pitches which originally were to be freely improvised as was the fashion at that time. Thus I wanted to free them the realm of chance and indeterminacy and to bring them back into my artistic control.- Hans Werner Henze

Nico Muhly's It Remains To Be Seen was written in 2006 for for full Orchestra and has a duration of approximately 11 minutes. Composers Note: It Remains to be Seen was written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. I wanted to treat the feeling of having just heard music and being expected to make one’s own – referencing the experience of leaving a BSO concert at the shed walking back to BUTI on a curvy back road arguing about music in pairs and threes and at the sign of bright headlights from behind reorganizing in single file as a car filled with happy concert-goers speeds by. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited occasionally illuminated dark road filled with arguing cars fragments of remembered music and a constant propulsive pulse. Nico Muhly
