The oratorio 'The Creation' represents not only a crucial point in Joseph Haydn's compositional output, but at the same time, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the oratorio. At the turn of the 19th century, Haydn broke with the traditional dominance of the arias, giving the chorus a distinctly greater significance. This opened the way for a new kind of choral oratorio which became one of the standard features of developing bourgeois concert life. Hob XXI:3. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Joseph Haydn's oratorio 'The Seasons' was composed directly after the first successful performances of 'The Creation'. 'The Seasons' has been greatly overshadowed by 'The Creation' for a long time and yet this work has far greater changes of style between popular Singspiel and great oratorio than 'The Creation'. 'The Seasons' continues to impress and remains part of the core repertoire to the present with its overwhelming richness of musical character and its immense formal variety. Par LACHNER FRANZ. Among his compositions, Franz Lachner, the long-serving Music Director of the Court of Munich and Director of the Royal Choir, left behind a considerable number of sacred works, including two settings of the Stabat Mater. The first Stabat Mater, op. 154, from 1856 was strictly for a vocal ensemble; the second, op. 168, from 1870 (see p. 5) included strings and organ, in which the darker timbre was achieved through the absence of the violins. In its harmonic expression the second composition is especially oriented towards the, at that time, modern style of the North German School centred around Liszt and Wagner, but without ever exceeding a moderate degree of technicaldifficulty in the voice parts./ Répertoire / Choeur SATB/SATB

Franz Schubert’s popular German Mass of 1827 follows in the footsteps of Michael Haydn’s work Deutsches Hochamt by turning to a German translation of the Ordinary mass. Its homophonic texture and largely syllabic setting of the words make it more accessible to lay choruses than Schubert’s masses in Latin an advantage reinforced by its diatonic melodic writing and constantly slow tempos.The present edition reproduces the Urtext from the New Schubert Edition and presents the definitive second version for chorus and wind instruments.
