Heinrich Poos is not the first composer inspired by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's poem 'Die Auferstehung', as even Gustav Mahler had already used these verses in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony 'Auferstehung'. Mahler was inspired to use a choral movement at the end of his symphony at the funeral of the conductor Hans von Bülow where a choir sang a chorale based on said text by Klopstock. It is particularly in his choral music that Peteris Vasks reveals his strong attachment to his Latvian home country. Nature, customs and traditions and the idea of freedom are the central themes of the texts he sets to music, while carefully using modern techniques of choral singing as well. In this arrangement of Faure's Requiem for soloists, female choir and organ, the tenor and bass parts are distributed among the altos which has necessitated some judicious adaptations in the part-writing. The second soprano replicates the original alto part largely unchanged, while the original baritone solo now resounds in the alto. The organ arrangement takes all three versions of the Requiem into consideration but primarily follows the second version of 1893 in terms of the rhythmic presentation of the instrumental parts.
