Dans les archives personnelles de Francis Ponge, on trouve des cahiers de travail, reprenant tout ou partie des poèmes à venir - esquisses, brouillons, extraits de ce qui sera ensuite publié dans ses recueils. Le cahier bois de rose est l'un d'eux - c'est en regard de ces archives mystérieuses pour moi que j'ai ainsi nommé mon cycle d'oeuvres de musique de chambre, s'étalant sur une période de cinq années.Chacune des pièces de ce cycle est construite de la même façon - sont interprétées toutes les esquisses, tentatives de mise en forme, réflexions diverses que j'ai pu noter au fil des mois - et le sujet de chaque oeuvre est un objet concret : ici une étoffe, là une allumette ou une pomme de terre. Je l'écoute, je le regarde, je le note, je l'analyse, j'en appréhende les contours réels, philosophiques et poétiques.La fébrilité musicale des objets que j'ai choisis de subjectiver est telle que la musique flirte souvent avec le silence et le bruit. La forme faite d'esquisses successives nous invite à prendre chaque moment comme s'il fallait s'y arrêter. C'est donc la présence scénique des interprètes, leur manière de donner corps à la forme comme à l'objet qui devient la clé de voûte de l'édifice. La clarté du geste, les déplacements, les respirations font la structure de l'oeuvre.Une pièce a son histoire propre découlant de l'aventure qu'a représentée la composition. J'avais attaqué mon travail autour de l'allumette par une pièce pour contrebasse et orchestre - ma question initiale était alors : qu'est-ce qui ressemble le plus (et le moins) à un son blanc d'orchestre ? le feu que pourrait faire une allumette. For Violone-Very little is known about the two sonatas which appear here in their original keys. They were placed in the library of the Music School in Oxford at the end of the seventeenth century in a form convenient for playing (i.e. unbound). The library was catalogued by Hake between 1850 and 1855 and the sonatas were eventually bound in 1855 with other instrumental and vocal manuscripts of the same period some of which are dated 1698.The sonatas are both inscribed on the title page Sonata Violone Solo. Col Basso per l'Organo o Cembalo. A third sonata bears the words Sonata Violino e Violoncino … di Giovannino del Violone. Giovannino (=Little or Young John) musthave been a performer and although the third sonata has been copied by a different hand it is conceivable that Giovannino is a connecting link between the three. He cannot however be assumed to be their author.The Violone was a six-stringed instrument with frets and there is evidence to suggest that the Contrabasso of the same period was similar but probably a little larger; the Violoncino (=Little Violone or Violoncello) must have been smaller. The word 'Violone' was also used as a collective term embracing all members of the Viol family which means that the sonatas might well have been written for a tenor or a bass Viol and not necessarily a Violone as such. Indeed when they are played on a Violone or Double Bass the continuo bass line must be played at a lower pitch than the solo instrument to prevent inversion of the intended harmony. (The use of a Violone/Double Bass continuo or 16' organ tone would overcome this problem.)The editor has added no ornaments or embellishments to the solo part as it appears in the original manuscript. It is open to debate whether a Violone player owing to the very nature of his instrument would have used any but the simplest melodic decorations. Quand nous en vînmes au trait du scherzo de la symphonie en ut mineur de Beethoven, qui figurait dans le programme, il nous sembla entendre les grognements d'une cinquantaine de porcs effarouchés : telle était l'incohérence et le défaut de justesse de l'exécution de ce passage. Peu à peu cependant elle devint meilleure, l'ensemble s'établit et la phrase apparut nettement dans toute sa sauvage rudesse'. Hector Berlioz, Mémoires, Chapitre LIII Dans ses Mémoires, Hector Berlioz, compositeur français de l'époque romantique (1803-1869) se tenait 'pour satisfait de pouvoir organiser et diriger un concert gigantesque' pour lequel il parvint 'à réunir un personnel de mille vingt deux exécutants'. Cette citation relate les répétitions partielles (par pupitre) du scherzo de la cinquième symphonie de Beethoven placées sous sa direction pour un concert exceptionnel donné à Paris lors de l'Exposition des produits de l'industrie en 1844. Ce scherzo réputé difficile pour la justesse, la conduite de l'archet et la manière de l'interpréter devenait particulièrement délicat, exécuté par un pupitre de trente-six contrebasses. Depuis l'époque de Berlioz, l'apprentissage de la contrebasse a évolué. Les professeurs enseignant dans les structures musicales permettent à nos élèves de devenir de vrais contrebassistes, de vrais techniciens, de vrais professionnels, de vrais musiciens. Néanmoins, le travail de pupitre (ou répétitions partielles) reste indispensable. Contrebassiste au sein de l'Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse pendant quarante ans, mon expérience professionnelle m'a permis de découvrir un vaste répertoire musical. De la musique symphonique à la musique de chambre en passant par le répertoire lyrique, j'ai pu aborder tous les styles de musique depuis l'époque baroque à la musique contemporaine. Les grands chefs d'orchestre qui m'ont dirigé m'ont appris à connaître tous les grands compositeurs de notre musique occidentale, la manière d'interpréter une oeuvre, de la comprendre et de l'analyser. Nous devons écouter et surtout entendre. J'ai voulu donc, par ce premier recueil, transmettre ce que j'avais appris à l'Orchestre et permettre aux élèves de découvrir ce répertoire musical. Professeur de contrebasse au CRD de Montauban, j'ai mis au programme du premier cycle et expérimenté avec mes élèves tous les textes présentés dans ce recueil. Les jeunes contrebassistes ont toujours été très sensibles au travail des extraits musicaux. Ils sont au contact avec la Musique. Afin de parachever leur travail personnel, il est souhaitable qu'ils écoutent les musiques étudiées (enregistrements et concerts). Ces acquisitions leur permettront de découvrir les compositeurs et d'apprendre le langage musical. Ce recueil pédagogique offre un voyage musical de l'époque baroque à l'époque postromantique (de Johann Sebastian Bach à Camille Saint-Saëns). The international fame of bass player François Rabbath acknowledges both the untiring teacher author of a Nouvelle technique de la contrebasse which a whole generation of students desirous of freeing themselves from the fetters of traditional teaching has taken up and the inspired soloist unsparing of himself in concert. For several years now he has become accustomed to spending a few days in the summer in Kansas City (Missouri) to give master classes and a concert there in the framework of the ‘KC BassFest’. In July 2016 a moving surprise awaited him: on the stage of the American Jazz Museum afull-length portrait was unveiled painted by local artist Ruthie Ingram from photos taken during his recital the previous year. By way of thanks Rabbath dedicated Trombes d’eau to her a solo piece lasting approximately six minutes composed at the instigation of the International Society of Bassists for the 2017 edition of the International Double Bass Competition. Conceived as a series of short variations on an impassioned theme the work emphasises evocative glissandi and explores double stopping and artificial harmonics without ever sacrificing the essential: the pleasure of musical expression.

Fine Day? is a work for unaccompanied double bass that portrays a conversation between two Hirta wifies perhaps meeting by chance while going about their daily lives. The first lady is older calm and serene - she's seen it all before and expects to see nothing new. In bar 9 a younger lady appears - much more animated and excited and bursting with gossip.The characters converse with a double bar and often a tempo change indicating the change of speaker. While the younger lady becomes very animated (and slightly frustrated) trying to ply her elder with today's juiciest gossip the older lady remains calm and serene apparently showing little interest untilthe final bars where after her neighbour has walked away she smiles and we see that she was listening after all...Skerry Selkie: 'Skerry' is an old Norse word for a small rocky island in the sea. Most Skerries are populated only by birds and seals. 'Selkie' is a local dialect word used right along the north coast of Scotland to describe seals. It also refers to a creature of Norse myth which could transform from seal to human form at will. Selkies like mermaids would mischievously enchant sailors with their beautiful singing...

Good work for examinations and recitals by an important British composer. Duration c.6'. AMEB (Australian Syllabus) 2004. Programme notes as follows:Lennox Berkeley was born in 1903 and died in 1989. After reading modern languages at Oxford he had no intention of becoming a composer until he met Ravel in 1926 who encouraged him to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He stayed in Paris until 1932 developing his own musical language. In 1936 after the death of his mother he went to Barcelona for the International Society for Contemporary Music festival where he met Benjamin Britten. The two lived together at Snape in Suffolk for a while until the outbreak ofwar before Berkeley moved back to London to work for the BBC. Here he met his future wife Freda Bernstein. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1946 until 1968 where his pupils included Richard Rodney Bennett Nicholas Maw and John Tavener among others. He was knighted in 1974. In early February 1971 I was playing in a concert at St. John's Smith Square London then only relatively recently restored as a superb venue for music. The programme which I believe was being broadcast included Berkeley's Serenade Op.12. It was a work I had always enjoyed playing and was standard string orchestra repertoire at the time. There was initially no platform at St. John's and so the audience sat virtually on top of the performers. So close were they on this occasion that I had to ask for a little more room in order to play. At the end of the piece the orchestra acknowledged the applause and the gentleman who I had all but practically decapitated with my over-enthusiastic playing stood up and took a bow. I had been almost playing in Lennox Berkeley's lap! The opportunity was too good to miss and I wasted little time in introducing myself. Mr Berkeley said that he had been fascinated by my playing and asked me to write to him about a possible commission.This I did on 6 February mentioning that

New Technique for the Double Bass part 5- Bass player François Rabbath born in 1931 in Aleppo is a real character in the world of music. He settled in Paris in 1955 where he played with the stars (Barbara Aznavour…) while continuing as a classical instrumentalist. Throughout the four preceding volumes Rabbath’s Nouvelle technique de la contrebasse presented in a four-language version (French English German and Spanish) endeavours to free the pupil from the shackles of traditional teaching. This famous Concerto for Double Bass and Piano accompaniment by Edouard Nanny is part of the “Double Bass Classics”. It is the famous piece n°23 of this collection which even though attributed to Dragonetti is commonly acknowledge as a tribute to him composed by Edouard Nanny. The book features a score and Double Bass part. Written in A major and divided in three parts Allegro Moderato Andante and Allegro Giusto all its movements start with the Piano which is later joined by the Double Bass. This latter then becomes the main element the Piano accompaniment being mainly chords. Quite difficult this piecewould fit the skills and abilities of advanced players for recitals or concerts. Edouard Nanny (1872-1942) was a well-known French Double Bass player composer and professor.
