The Bristol Collection - Volume 3 is a fabulous third collection of contemporary Hymn Tune Preludes for Organ. Edited by Lee Hastings Bristol Junior this volume includes eight more preludes by composers from both sides of the Atlantic. Born in 1955 Lebanese-French composer organist and improviser Naji Hakim studied under Jean Langlais at the Paris Conservatoire before succeeding Olivier Messiaen as organist of the Saint Trinity Church in Paris. Considering his significant musical training Hakim's compositions are created from a wealth of knowledge and understanding  Hommage À Igor Stravinsky being no exception. Composed in 1990  Hommage À Igor Stravinsky is a Triptych for Organ. As suggested by the title Hakim's work reflects Stravinsky's style and therefore is highly modern in composition.With a typical performance lasting about 16 minutes and 40 seconds the concerto is made up of three movements; Prelude Dance and Finale. The Organ addresses many virtuosic techniques making for a challenging yet exhilarating performance. For all advanced organists seeking varied modern repertoire Hakim's Hommage À Igor Stravinsky is an essential addition to the repertoire.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms harmony and melodies  Livre Du Saint Sacrement for Organ is no exception to the composer's popular distinctive style. Composed in 1984  Livre Du Saint Sacrement is a major collection of Organ pieces by the composer. Messiaen began to compose the cycle of compositions in 1928 and it comprises 18 parts. The work was first performed in 1986 by organist Almut Roessler with a typical performance lasting about 100 minutes. Messiaen's Livre Du SaintSacrement is essential to all advanced virtuoso and contemporary organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.

Sonata Eroïca Op. 94 (1930) is a melodious piece composed by Joseph Jongen for Great Organ. Dedicated to Joseph Bonnet who was the organist of the St Eustache Church in Paris this piece is quite difficult (upper intermediate/advanced level) and requires the use of different keyboard divisions and pedals. Lasting around 16 minutes this wonderful work is quite architectural and will astonish you by its grandeur. It is the perfect piece to include in a recital. Joseph Jongen was a Belgian Organist composer and professor of harmony and counterpoint. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome and composed numerouspieces including music chamber works symphonies concertos and songs. His most famous piece is the Symphonie Concertante (1926).

By the most extraordinary coincidence I had already done a good deal of sketching for this Organ piece before this all happened and had determined on a 'darkness-to-light' kind of piece - so the coincidence as well as my feelings of elation were both too strong to ignore.The piece persues a course from a fairly knotty slow beginning (heralded by a few chords that recur at the very end) full of rising themes (another coincidence - the material had already been sketched before the miners were trapped underground) and reaching a loud climax the quick toccata-like second section bursting vigourously out of the tension which is created at the beginning of the work.

Charles Hubert Hastings Parry with an important composer of the late 19th and early 20th century best known for his hymn Jerusalem but also widely influential in his compositions and as head of the Royal College of Music. The later years of Organist teacher and composer Hubert Parry’s life were a fruitful time of composition and academic output. He published two sets of seven Chorale preludes for Organ mostly in the structural style of the Bach Chorale preludes with contrapuntal phrases alternating with statement of the Chorale theme usually in the upper part.The largest of the preludes Hanover features two statements of the tune paired with sweeping arpeggios and astream of semiquavers in the left hand. There are several instances of thundering finales. The book includes Chorale preludes on the tunes of St Mary Eventide St Cross St Thomas Hanover Martyrdom and Croft’s 136th .

The Suite Gothique by French composer Leon Boellmann has proved to be of lasting popularity far beyond the boarders of France and is a worthy representation of the typically French school later to be expanded by Widor and Vierne.
