The brightness of D Major is perfect for string orchestra, and the yellow color of the mimosa flower reminds me of this key. Mimosa Shower opens with a vivid impressionistic introduction, followed by a gently flowing theme. Every instrument plays the melody which flows side to side. Yukiko Nishimura creates a dialogue between the sections of the orchestra, asking each part to have awareness of the conversation and to respond musically. The orchestra creates harmonies which ebb and flow as the wind blows through the mimosas. This arrangement for developing orchestra at Level 3, creates a festive mood with a warm introduction presented by solo violin andcello, which leads into several contrasting adaptations of the piece. A minor variation provides a moment of reflection, which pavesthe way for a stirring chorale version of the Twelve Days of Christmas concluding with a sweeping finale. Twelve Days of Christmas is idiomatically written for developing string players, and is scored in the lower positions to allow directors to focus on blend, intonation, and rhythmic accuracy. I Give You The End Of A Golden String was commissioned in 2013 by the Royal Philharmonic Society/Britten-Pears Foundation to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Brittenand the bicentenary of thefoundation of the Royal Philharmonic Society.The piece was first performed on 8th June 2013 by the Britten Sinfonia conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth.'My aim when I began this piece was to create a long length ofstring music out of a single strand of melody.While experimenting at the beginning shaping and extending a melody in many possible directions I cameacross William Blake???s lines???I give you the end of a goldenstring;Only wind it into a ball It will lead you in at Heaven???s gate Built in Jerusalem???s wall???and this became my working method winding a single tune around itself so that it gradually formed itselfinto amuch richer more complex texture. The process happens three times producing the equivalent of acontinuous three-movement concerto.The ???first movement??? is engendered by two solo violas (the melody at the beginning alreadyentwined witha slightly alternative version of itself). The ???slow movement??? (a more extended more decorated developmentof the opening tune) is introduced by a solo cello (soon winding itself into a quartet of celli). James Weeks' Ærc for any number of orchestral string instruments (at least 12). Composed and published 2016.Duration: 26-30 minutes.Ærc is the Old Engliosh word for ark dervied from the Latin arca a chest. Here it denotes an enclosed space perhaps of refuge or safety certainly of intimacy. As in the ark or Noah the players are paired entering the figurative space of the work two-by-two and creating a dense polyphonic texture (a giant viol consort) from breath-like bow-strokes each pair in rythmic unison before exiting in sequence.

The five movements are like snapshots of different landscapes whose associations trigger fleeting memories and images including shadowy allusions to Mendelssohn Haydn Liszt plainsong and gypsy music. The title stolen from Rachmaninov suggests a balance between music both abstract and illustrative virtuoso or dramatic.
