Commisisoned by Lieksa Brass Week and premiered by its artistic leader Jouko Harjanne in 2022, Panu Aaltio's Concerto for trumpet and orchestra is now available as solo part & piano reduction. The subtitle Koli refers to the famous hill, which has inspired artists like Jean Sibelius and Eero Järnefelt. Finnish nature and animals are the source for Aaltio's concerto, starting from the wake of the forest of the first movement, with darker colours of a tragedy in the second and finally the reutrun of the light and hope in the third movement.Panu Aaltio (b. 1982) is a film composer based in Helsinki and Los Angeles. He has composed music to 30 feature films, multiple TV series and video games, as well as a full-length ballet for the Finnish National Opera.

Martin Amlin’s first recital work for Trumpet and Piano brings all the iridescent excitement that has intrigued other performers. Composed for his renowned colleague Terry Everson, Amlin’s sonata pours new wine into old bottles with its three movements titled: 1. Invention, 2. Chaconne, and 3. Moto Perpetuo. The publication provides solo parts for both C and E-flat Trumpet. Composer and pianist Martin Amlin has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Tanglewood Music Center, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Massachusetts Artists Foundation, St. Botolph Club Foundation, and the Massachusetts Council for the Arts. He was a recipient of an ASCAP Grant to Young Composers and has received many ASCAPlus Awards. He has been a resident at Yaddo, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the MacDowell Colony, where he was named a Norlin Fellow.Much of Amlin’s music is characterized by a pungent tonality and energetic rhythms. His Sonata for Piccolo and Piano and Sonata No. 2 for Flute and Piano both won the National Flute Association’s Newly Published Music Competition. Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra was premiered by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra,and he has had performances of his music by the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, John Oliver Chorale, Back Bay Chorale, Webster Trio, and the American Vocal Arts Quintet. He has had commissions from the Seattle Flute Society, Pacific Serenades, the Chicago Flute Club, ALEA III, the James Pappoutsakis memorial flute competition, pianist Andrew Willis, and clarinetist Michael Webster.Martin Amlin is Chairman of the Department of Composition and Theory at Boston University and Director of the Young Artists Composition Program at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He is also recipient of Boston University’s Kahn Award for his Piano Sonata No. 7. He studied with Nadia Boulanger at the Ecoles d’Art Américaines in Fontainebleau and the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, and received masters and doctoral degrees as well as the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Mr. Amlin has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra in performances of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and has performed on the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Prelude concerts at both Symphony Hall and Tanglewood. He has also appeared on the FleetBoston Celebrity Series and been pianist for the M.I.T. Experimental Music Studio and the New England Ragtime Ensemble. This work was commissioned by the Osaka Kyoiku University Wind Orchestra. The world premiere took place with trumpet soloist, Osamu Kumashiro and was conducted by the composer, who was inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) during a visit to Florence. This work is a musical collage of impressions following the composers visit to Italy. The solo part can also be performed on euphonium or alto saxophone. û¿Zatten was commissioned in 2005 by Trumpeter Paul Neebe during the composer's vacation to do ancestral research in the town of Zatten, currently part of Poland.Roger Petrich writes the following about his Zatten Concerto for Trumpet:The 'DNA' of this compostion tracks back to my great-grandfather and the tiny Plattdeutsch village where he was born. Zatten, [then] located in the eastern part of Berlin/Brandenburg is in an area of forest and small farms dating back to the 1600's. My grandfather R. T. Petrich, whose initials I bear, was six years old when he, along with his parents, sister, and older brother left Prussia to start a new life in the USA.My own childhood memories include many visits to the family homestead in Dakota Territory, where I used to play in the barn which hosted many summer dances. The Dakota sky was vast by day, and nights could become magical with the addition of the Northern Lights. Though not a professional musician, my father kept up his trumpet playing all his life. In a special way it was his voice - a sound that deeply imprinted all my growing up years. All of this is mixed together in my Zatten ConcertoThe Zatten Concerto is in three movements, the two outer movements faster and the middle is a Largo. This work is appropriate for advanced performers.The title Zatten (the name of the small village in Germany where his family was located before immigrating to the USA) is spelled out in Morse Code in the very opening eight bars of the work. The Concerto is originally written for Trumpet and String Orchestra, this version using a reduction for Piano.

Requiem, 9 sacred concertos for piano solo, trumpet and large chamber orchestra is the title of the original work of which Henze said: These nine instrumental pieces speak of the fears and needs of mankind today; of sickness and death, of love and loneliness. Three movements of this extremely demanding and complex work * Rex tremendae, Lacrimosa and Sanctus * have here been skilfully arranged for the organ by the composer Moritz Eggert. This arrangement, which is now often played in churches, places great demands upon the musicians who perform it * but they can always be sure of producing a deep impact with these three Requiem movements. A version for trumpet and piano (ED 8548) is currently in production.

“French composer and conductor, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Gregorian Variations on a Salve Ragina 1964. As with his other wind compositions, Gregorian Variations for Trumpet and String Orchestra and Organ reduction was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille, but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents, Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor, and during the summer, he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However, in 1921, he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes, often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Gregorian Variations on a Salve Regina is a highly unusual and modern work based on an old Marian Hymn (a song for the Virgin Mary). The variations exploit tonality, rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. This Tomasi piece is suitable for advanced trumpeters, providing an exciting, alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.â€.
