Commissioned by the Santa Rosa Symphony for Paul Silverthorne, principal violist of the London Symphony, the character of this grand three-movement work may best be described in the composer’s own words: “If I had to describe the character of each instrument in the orchestra, I would consider the viola to be the voice of wisdom, moderation, and prudence. However I find there is much flair and brilliance hidden beneath the surface. In my viola concerto I aimed to explore these contrasts: beauty and sweetness; agitation and angst; brilliance and virtuosity.â€.

Born in Nottingham, England, in 1862, Edmund Severn moved to the United States at the age of four along with his family who settled in Hartford, Connecticut. Severn began to study the Violin with guidance fromhis father, who taught the instrument professionally. He later studied with Franz Milcke and Bernard Listemann, concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, before moving to Berlin to study bowing technique under Emanuel Wirth,the first assistant of Joseph Joachim at the Berlin Hochschule.
As a composer Edmund Severn wrote mainly orchestral music, as well as many pieces for the Violin including a concerto; he also wrote threestringquartets.
To this day, the Polish Dance for Violin and Piano has remained Severnâ??s most famous work. The piece is arranged here by Alan Arnold for Viola and Piano.

Gong's Viola Concerto was premiered by the Shanghai Philharmonic with fellow Juilliard graduate Liyuan Liu on viola. The work is based on J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, as part of a program addressing the emotional health of teenagers, along with the composer's autobiographical 6th Symphony. In addition to this piano reduction, the orchestral accompaniment is available for rent from the publisher.

A 'Last Night of the Proms' without this march - unthinkable! 'Pomp and Circumstance Military March No. 1' with its middle section, the hymn-like 'Land of Hope and Glory' by Edward Elgar (1857-1934), belongs to the finale of the London music event like the Radetzky March usually played as last piece to the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The fame and popularity of the other four military marches composed by Elgar between 1901 and 1907 fade in comparison to this secret national anthem of Great Britain (although strongly rivalled by 'Rule, Britannia!'). It is, indeed, an equally rousing and catchy piece of music, and the catchy tune in the middle has just become a classical 'hit'. Thanks to the present edition, all those who do not have a large symphony orchestra at home can now play this rousing march by themselves.
