It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996. In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from the composer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with sonic effects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. Composed in 1949 the Concerto pour saxophone alto et orchestra by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) was dedicated to Marcel Mule a renowned French Saxophonist. It was written as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece and was performed by Mule himself in 1949. This publication is the Alto Saxophone and Piano adaptation of the Concerto. Written in two movements it begins with a secretive introduction leading to a cadenza that reminds of the introduction. It follows on the second part with an Allegro which finishes unexpectedly on an intense suite of fast notes to congregate on a strong Largo. Henri Tomasi is the French composer conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927 He composed a variety of concerti (16) for Trumpet Violin Viola Clarinet Trombone Horn Oboe Flute as well as Ballets Orchestra Ballades and other pieces.

Concertino Da Camera written in 1935 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) was a small concerto for alto-saxophone and eleven instruments: Flute Bassoon Oboe Horn Trumpet and Strings. This score is for Alto Saxophone and Piano. This Concertino is in two movements Allegro con moto and Larghetto РAnimato Molto is dedicated to the saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is standing out for its large use of the Alto-Saxophone. It can be technically challenging and has a strong lyrical part. Its author Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed manysymphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He was also in charge of the Accad̩mie de France in the Villa M̩dicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera. This concerto has some similarities with his Flute Concerto (1934) also published by Alphonse Leduc.

As the Saxophone is commonly associated with the jazz style classical music for the instrument had always been lacking. Therefore when Paul Bonneau (1918-1995) composed his Deux Caprices En Formed De Valse for Alto Saxophone and Piano it was well-received by performers of the genre. Bonneau's composition was highly versatile ranging from over fifty film scores operettas songs and other pieces for Saxophone including a concerto. The Deux Caprices En Formed De Valse however were particularly acclaimed for their use of advanced techniques. The works contains typically French characteristicsincluding chromaticism and difficult technical passages. All these elements combined make for an enjoyable and challenging piece for saxophonists.

German baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist becoming a composer against his family's wishes. However his musical career saw him hold important positions and to this day he remains a major composer. His sublime Sonata in C minor for Oboe is superbly arranged for Alto Saxophone by contemporary French saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix. Telemann composed his Sonata in C minor for Oboe whilst in service to the German Royal family. During this time he composed a wealth of instrumental music including Sonatas and Concertos. Londeix's arrangementfor Saxophone of Telemann's Sonata includes adaptions for the instrument such as dynamics phrase marks performance and tempo directions articulation and breath marks making the baroque genre accessible to the Saxophone a relatively modern instrument.

Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Edison Demisov was composed in1970 and covers three movements. The first part Allegro shows serialism; the second Lento focuses on new techniques; with the last one Allegro Moderato reminiscent of Jazz music. This strong>Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano dedicated to the French Saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix was strongly influenced by Western European music and requires a certain level of ability (intermediate to advanced players) especially for the second movement. Edison Demisov (1929-1996) was a Russian Siberian-born composer specialising in alternative /non-conformist Soviet music. Strongly influenced by the West he was often criticised by his peers. He gained international recognition for the composition 'Le soleil des Incas' (1964) and wrote numerous concerti sonatas and other pieces.

The Easy Concert Pieces series for alto saxophone and piano provide easy to intermediate pieces from the Renaissance to the modern era for music lessons, concert performances or private music-making. The volumes with accompanying CD add to the not very extensive repertoire of performance pieces for saxophone. They were carefully selected according to technical and musical requirements and are arranged in three volumes according to their level of difficulty.
