A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England).
There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. Onward Christian Soldiers was the result.
It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan.
Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years. Onward!

Een stukje geschiedenis: Pinkster-Maandag was een bijzondere dag voor de scholen in Yorkshire (Engeland).
Er vonden allerlei activiteiten plaats. De leerlingen van Sabine Baring-Gould zouden samenkomen met de kinderen van eennaburig dorp. Het leek haar een goed idee, dat er tijdens de wandeling er naar toe, gezongen zou worden. Ze kon echter geen geschikt lied vinden en besloot er zelf maar één te schrijven. ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ was het resultaat.
Het werd spoedig erg populair, al was ze zelf niet geheel tevreden over het rijmschema. De gebruikte melodie (St. Gertrude) was van de bekende Engelse componist Sir Arthur S. Sullivan.

Terug naar nu: Gawan Robertsheeft de hymne een behoorlijke update gegeven. Hij voorzag het nog steeds populaire lied van een stevige rockbeat en voegde af en toe gewaagde harmonisaties (samenklanken) toe. Zo kan het, ook voor de huidige generaties, weerjaren mee. Onward!

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. A fantastic tuba feature with brass band backing. Driving semiquaver rhythms push this piece forwards whilst remaining away from the centre of attention which is undoubtedly the big old tuba! Full of semiquavers and scales rushing up to the top of the range of the instrument, there can be no doubt that the tuba is the star of the show. The solo part is carefully thought through with enough rests to make it approachable, while the syncopatino in the other parts give the music an energy that is maintained to the very final flourish, instigated by a demisemiquaver scale run on the tuba! Intermediate and above ensemble parts, but the solo tuba part needs a fairly skilled and confident player to get the most out of this piece.

It is true that tastes differ.
Coffee has known a long history : it has been drunk since the 17th century. On one hand people drink coffee for relaxation, on the other hand it is drunk to ward off tiredness or sleepiness.
‘Strong Coffee’ composed by Ron Gilmore works both ways. There will be people who will be able to relax during ‘Strong Coffee’, whereas others will experience it as a real boost. Is it a bit too strong after all, such a funky Soul Beat? Then adding a little milk might help.
As said before, tastes differ!

Koffie kent een lange geschiedenis. Al sinds de 17e eeuw wordt deze drank genuttigd. Enerzijds wordt koffie gedronken voor de gezelligheid, anderzijds wordt koffie gebruikt als middel om vermoeidheidof slaperigheid weg te drinken.
Met ‘Strong Coffee’ van Ron Gilmore kunt u beide kanten op. Er zullen mensen zijn die bij Strong Coffee even bijkomen, voor de ander is het een echte opkikker. Is het toch een beetje te sterk,zo’n lekkere Soul Beat? Een scheutje melk helpt.
Smaken verschillen nu eenmaal.

What a stunning piece of cinematic history and what a stunning soundtrack. John William’s wonderfully compassionate main theme is woven into this arrangement that will haunt both band and audience. The magnificently simple melody reflects both the sadness and hope portrayed in the epic Steven Spielberg film.

Met Schindler’s List, een film over het leven van Oskar Schindler, een Duits industrieel die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog met de inzet van al zijn financiële middelen meer dan 1100 Joden redde van de dood in Auschwitz, schreefregisseur Steven Spielberg filmgeschiedenis. De muziek bij deze - in Amerika met maar liefst zeven Oscars bekroonde - film werd geschreven door John Williams, de componist met wie Spielberg in het verleden al meer succesvolle productiesmaakte (onder andere Indiana Jones, Jawa, E.T. en Jurassic Park). Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer, although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures, Woodland Sketches, that has survived as his best-known work, with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Philip Sparke has expertly arranged this simple work for brass band.

Philip Sparke bearbeitete dieses Stück des amerikanischen Komponisten Edward MacDowell, der weit über die Grenzen seines Heimatlandes hinaus berühmt ist. To a Wild Rose wurde seinem bekanntesten Werk, den Woodland Sketches, entnommen, einer Reihe anmutiger, unprätentiöser musikalischer Miniaturen. De Red Hot Chilli Peppers, een Californische cross-overband, combineert rock met pop, funk, rap en punk. Eind 2006 bracht RHCP het nummer Snow (Hey Oh) uit, dat afkomstig is van Stadium Arcadium. Dit dubbelalbum wasgoed voor maar liefst vier Grammy Awards. Vergeleken met het vaak vrij heftige gangbare repertoire van de band is Snow (Hey Oh) een melodische en rustige song die bekend en geliefd is bij een breed publiek, Peter Kleine Schaarsschreef een aansprekend arrangement.

Der Song Snow (Hey Oh) war die dritte Single-Auskopplung aus dem Album Stadium Arcadium der kalifornischen Rockband Red Hot Chili Peppers, das mit vier Grammys ausgezeichnet wurde. Für die sonst rocklastigen und auch mal provokanten Chili Peppers ist Snow ein eher ruhiges Lied, melodiös und eingängig, das ein breites Publikum anspricht. Peter Kleine Schaars sorgte für eine authentische Bearbeitung des eingängigen Titels.

En mai 2006, le groupe californien Red Hot Chili Peppers publie son neuvième album studio Stadium Arcadium qui sera récompensé de quatre Grammy Awards. Une fois encore, les tubes funk-hard rock énergiques côtoient de jolies ballades plus tranquilles et mélodieuses telles que Snow (Hey Oh).
