The composer states:'The term 'oblique strategies? was coined jointly by British musician Brian Eno and German-born British visual artist Peter Schmidt to describe a series of printed cards they developed throughout the 1970's. The cards had their origins in sets of uncannily similar working principles that both artists had established independently, and featured aphorisms intended as a means of triggering inspiration or providing useful stimulus during the creative process, particularly when encountering difficulties of fatigue or time constraint.As Eno and Schmidt wrote in their introduction to the first edition in 1975: 'They can be used as a pack (a set of possibilities being continuously reviewed in the mind) or by drawing a single card from the shuffled pack when a dilemma occurs in a working situation. In this case, the card is trusted even if its appropriateness is quite unclear. The first performance was given by Raphael Wallfisch at a private event in 2004 at the Palace of Westminster. Although entirely unbarred the music is fully notated, both rhythmically and melodically. The B flat-B motif derived from the work's title (i.e. H-B in German notation) features prominently throughout, and a wide expressive and dynamic range is called for. Although small in scale, this work is an important addition to MacMillan's output for the cello, already distinguished by the short, intense solo in angustiis II ..., a large-scale concerto and two mighty sonatas.

Instrument : cello Series : Cello Library Nombre de Pages : 16 'The idea of writing a 'Jazz Suite for cello solo' came out when I tried to imagine how it would have sounded like if one of the baroque masters (Gabrielli, Buxtehude, Bach) had lived in our time and wanted to write a suite of dances. I thought it would probably still keep some of the conventions of the traditional form, like maybe the use of a Prelude to establish the key and the alternation of slow with fast movements. But some things would have definitely been different: the harmonies, for example would probably have been more complex and not always tonal. Also the popular dances used as a workbench for the suite would have been not gigues or Bourees but perhaps latin american or Jazz standards. Well, since the great masters are unfortunately not able at the moment to accept my challenge, I had to write it myself. I hope you will enjoy it. The famous cello player Janos Starker says: Lucio Amanti is a very fine cellist and imaginative composer. His Jazz Suite is an enjoyable mix of jazz and classicism. I much appreciate his work.'
