Philip Sparke a réalisé une scène d’hiver en pleine campagne. A Winter’s Tale s’ouvre avec une série d’accords soutenus, joués par les bois, et colorés par le timbre cristallin des cloches, tandis qu’un saxophone alto chante une complainte crépusculaire. Un passage orchestral court, mais dense, prélude à l’exposition du thème principal. Les couleurs douces et vaporeuses enveloppent les champs et les forêts enneigés. L’orchestre reprend le thème tandis que l’on entend au loin un tintement de grelots annonçant le passage imminent d’une troïka. Par SPARKE PHILIP. To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor. The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer’s aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one. After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after ashort bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax. An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

Par YAGISAWA SATOSHI. Cette oeuvre a été composée en commande de l’Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band à l’occasion de son 50e concert annuel, ce qui a inspiré le titre. L’amitié profonde entre Hiroki Ito – le chef d’orchestre – et Satoshi Yagisawa est à l’origine decette fanfare jubilatoire d’une durée approximative de deux minutes, pièce d’ouverture idéale pour votre concert. La composition originale était pour un orchestre extrêmement grand de 200 musiciens, comprenant aussi une banda séparée, uneharpe et d’autres instruments spéciaux. Suite from the Incidental Music. Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847) a composé la musique de la pièce de théâtre de William Shakespeare A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Le Songe d’une Nuit d’Été) à deux moments différents. En 1826, à l’âge de 16 ans, il écrit une ouverture de concert (Op. 21). Seize ans plus tard, en 1842, il composa la musique de scène (opus 61) pour le roi Frédéric-Guillaume IV de Prusse, dans laquelle il incorpora l’ouverture existante. L’ouverture a été créée à Stettin (alors en Prusse, aujourd’hui Szczecin, Pologne) le 20 février 1827, sous la direction de Carl Loewe. Mendelssohn a dû parcourir 80 miles à travers une tempête de neige déchaînée pour se rendre au concert, qui est devenu sa première apparition publique. La première représentation britannique de l’ouverture fut dirigée par Mendelssohn lui-même le 24 juin 1829, aux Argyll Rooms de Londres. Après le concert, Thomas Attwood a reçu la partition de l’ouverture pour la garde, mais l’a laissée dans un taxi et n’a jamais été retrouvée. The composition is based on the biblical story of the patriarch Jacob, who in a dream sees a ladder reaching into the sky.
