Martin Tourish is an accordionist, composer and musicologist from Co. Donegal, now based in Dublin. Celtic music is in his blood, for his ancestors were noted collectors of dance music manuscripts dating back to the 19th century. With many recordings to his credit, he now offers his expertise to performers wishing to explore the rich culture of Irish and other Celtic music on a variety of instruments. 'World Music - Celtic” presents material from the Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish and Breton traditions. It makes no great technical demands on the players, but Tourish points out that notation of this music is often 'skeletal”, hence it is important to gain a knowledge of the individual traditions in question and, naturally, he offers plenty of information on performance practice. The collection spans three centuries, from the blind bardic harpists of the 18th century to the international performers of the present day. Tourish accepts that this volume can only scratch the surface of a multi-faceted genre but hopes you will see it as a stepping stone to delve deeper into recordings, festivals and the very communities whence this music comes. Par DAVIS OLIVER. 'For many years the violinist Kerenza Peacock and I have been discussing the concept of a piece about trees. One day I received in the post from her a book by Annie Davidson entitled, ‘How to be More Tree’. This brilliant book became the inspiration for the Arboretum Suite. The first tree I decided to write about was Aspen. I read that Aspen trees work together sharing water and nutrients through their root system, so only as a community can they grow in strength. Aspen is followed by Açai Palm, a tree which is native to Brazil and Argentina, hence the Latin American feel of this movement. The score is marked pizzicato, the plucked sound further accentuating the South American rhythms. The Vanishing Mahogany of the Amazon naturally has a very sombre feel, although the major key ending of this movement reflects the hope that we may still manage to save the rain forests. The last movement describes my response to the description of the Mountain Hemlock. (Memorial for the Columbia Astronauts). Par EOTVOS PETER. Eötvös wrote this piece in memory of the seven astronauts who lost their lives in the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in 2003. The number 7 determines the musical, rhythmic and formal structure of the work: 49 musicians are divided into seven groups, and as well as the solo violin there are six further violins arranged correspondingly around the hall; and the solo violin itself portrays each of the astronauts and their different origin, from America via Israel to India, in folkloristically tinged cadenzas. 'The violin concerto Seven is a very personal monologue and the musical expression of my sympathy towards the seven astronauts who lost their lives while exploring space in fulfilment of a fundamental dream of mankind.'
