Petr ?ajkovskij besaß nicht nur französische Wurzeln. Von Kindheit an wuchs er in engem Kontakt zur französischen Kultur auf, die ihn zeitlebens fesseln sollte. Der Komponist hielt sich immer wieder in Paris auf, machte Bekanntschaft mit den Größen des dortigen Musiklebens und träumte davon, eine Oper für die französischen Bühnen zu komponieren. Der Band rekonstruiert neben diesen biographischen Aspekten die französische ?ajkovskij-Rezeption zwischen 1877 und 1900 mit ihren verschiedenen Stationen, Protagonisten und ästhetischen Positionen. Es wird gezeigt, wie die anfänglich begeisterte Aufnahme des Komponisten in den französisch-russischen Salons der 1880er Jahre in eine Ablehnung umschlägt, die das stereotype Bild vom Trivialmusiker ?ajkovskij vorwegnimmt. In ?ajkovskijs Oeuvre hat der Bezug zu Frankreich gleichwohl deutliche Spuren hinterlassen. Dargestellt wird eine ganz Gruppe von Kompositionen, die für französische Interpreten oder Auftraggeber geschaffen wurden. Einen Schlüssel zum Verständnis von ?ajkovskijs Musik bietet auch seine Auseinandersetzung mit französischer Musik von Hector Berlioz über Georges Bizet bis zu Camille Saint-Saëns. Anhand der französischen Musikzitate, die in seinen Werken immer wieder begegnen, kann schließlich ?ajkovskij Umgang mit fremder Musik und die Herausbildung einer hybriden musikalischen Sprache analysiert werden. / Voix
