Spring has finally arrived. The days grow longer, birds prepare to nest, trees turn green and plants begin to bloom as nature wakes up from her winter sleep. This, and the fact that the composer?s third grandson was born in the spring, were the inspiration for Spring Song.

To the Russian Woman for Alto Saxophone and Piano-French composer Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) significantly contributed to the woodwind repertoire particularly for Saxophone. Characteristic Pieces in the Form of a Suite for Alto Saxophone and Piano was published in 1962 and remains popular in the advanced saxophonist's repertoire. Dubois' music is characteristically light-hearted with unusual harmonic and melodic textures. The second movement of Characteristic Pieces in the Form of a Suite for Alto Saxophone and Piano To the Russian Woman reflects Dubois' compositional characteristics as well as elements of Russiancharacteristics with a typical performance lasts about two and a half minutes. Characteristic Pieces in the Form of a Suite is essential to the advanced saxophonist's repertoire. Dubois' most famous work makes for an exciting and enjoyable performance for players and audiences alike.

Concertino Da Camera written in 1935 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) was a small concerto for alto-saxophone and eleven instruments: Flute Bassoon Oboe Horn Trumpet and Strings. This score is for Alto Saxophone and Piano. This Concertino is in two movements Allegro con moto and Larghetto РAnimato Molto is dedicated to the saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is standing out for its large use of the Alto-Saxophone. It can be technically challenging and has a strong lyrical part. Its author Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed manysymphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He was also in charge of the Accad̩mie de France in the Villa M̩dicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera. This concerto has some similarities with his Flute Concerto (1934) also published by Alphonse Leduc.

Composed for one of the world's leading saxophonists John Harle on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday Charlie's Flea Circus is a delightful 5-minute work for saxophone and piano by Carl Davis.Taking in waltzes and mazurkas this characterful and witty work makes a wonderful addition to the repertoire and is presented here in a versions for alto saxophone and piano or alto doubling sopranino saxophone and piano.

Solo and Piano Reduction. A notable Czech composer, Jaromir Weinberger achieved sudden fame with the production of his opera, Svanda dudâk (Schwanda, the Bagpiper), written in a popular Bohemian style, at the Czech Opera, in Prague in 1927. Weinberger fled Europe under the growing Nazi threat and took up residence in New York in 1939, where he enjoyed a number of major orchestral performances and commissions of all kinds. One of these came from renowned saxophonist Cecil Leeson, who aske Weinberger to compose a concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra. Due to the outbreak of World War II, the premiere would not happen until 1946, six years after the completion of the concerto in piano score. The work was revised following the premiere and it is only now that those revisions have been incorporated into the solo saxophone and piano reduction with this performance edition by Weinberger scholar, publisher and saxophonist Tristan Willems.

Depuis des siècles, « la lecture à vue » également appelée « déchiffrage » est une épreuve pour les concours de musique. Les compositeurs sont sollicités pour cet exercice et composent un texte court selon un cahier des charges assez précis (minutage, difficulté, modes de jeu instrumental, etc). Depuis la création d'une classe de saxophone confiée à Adolphe Sax en 1857 au Gymnase musical militaire, qui n'est autre qu'une annexe du Conservatoire de Paris, et jusqu'à la nomination de Marcel Mule en 1942, les concours se multiplient partout en France, tant au conservatoire qu'aux orchestres divers et variés, principalement militaires.
Les trois textes anonymes de style purement français (volume 4 de cette série consacrée aux déchiffrages : « andantino » de date inconnue / « morceau à vue » en 1881 / « andantino » en 1890) nous parviennent des Archives Nationales en lien avec le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Si ces dates ne correspondent pas à une possible affectation à la classe de saxophone car Adolphe Sax n'était alors plus en service, on pourrait imaginer qu'elles aient été composées pour un concours extérieur.
L'origine de la « lecture à vue » signée par Gabriel Dupont (1878-1914) non datée (volume 2), est également une énigme. Un doute plane sur le fait que ce texte soit bien du compositeur français, même si on en reconnaît la tendresse de cette page délicieuse. En 1922, Guillaume Balay (1871-1943) alors chef de musique de la Garde Républicaine de Paris compose deux « lecture à vue » pour saxophone (alto et ténor) vraisemblablement pour un concours militaire (volume 5) ; rappelons qu'entre 1870 et 1942, le conservatoire de Paris sera dépourvu de classe de saxophone.
La Ville de Reims accueillera deux jeunes compositeurs qui deviendront des personnalités musicales à l'esthétique prononcée ; tout d'abord Georges Migot (1891-1976) qui propose une « lecture à vue » (volume 3) en 1929 pour le concours de l'institut de musique, puis André Jolivet (1905-1974) qui compose son « déchiffrage » en 1938 (volume 1).
Toutes ces courtes pièces ont été étudiées méticuleusement avant de décider de leur redonner vie. Cette publication leur permet à présent de faire partie du patrimoine musical du saxophone classique.

French composer Paul Dukas (1865-1935) is best known for his orchestral piece The Sorcerer's Apprentice. However his catalogue represents many other significant works by the composer including Alla Gitana for Alto Saxophone and Piano. Composed in 1909 Alla Gitana was originally a selection of vocal studies. However Marcel Mule's transcription for Alto Saxophone has made this delightful work more accessible. Dukas reflects the French romantic style in Alla Gitana through uses of flourishing semiquavers lyrical melodies and chromaticism. For all aspiring advancedsaxophonists Dukas' Alla Gitana is an exquisite addition to the repertoire.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published his Corsican Song for Alto Saxophone and Piano in 1932. As with his other wind compositions  Chant Corse was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions as is the case with Chant Corse. This Tomasi work is unusual in composition through its exploitation of tonality rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However this Tomasi piece suitable for advanced saxophonists provides an exciting alternative addition to the repertoire.

The pieces in this collection are all of moderate difficulty and will provide good concert material for the serious Saxophonist. They are all in true eccentric Satie style and indeed two of the Gnossiennes in this collection were originally written without bar-lines! Arranged for Alto Saxophone with Piano Accompanient.

Bernhard Heiden's Solo For Alto Saxophone And Piano was written in 1969 and dedicated to Eugene Rousseau. The solo consists of one movement with a variety of tempos and time signatures.
