Herbert Howell’s Requiem written for unaccompanied SATB chorus and soli. Although written in 1936 Requiem was not released for performance until 1980 held back by Howells following the death of his son in 1935. It is a harmonious and deeply Romantic composition but restrained and it is at these moments we realise how affected he was by his loss. It was the composer's intention that Requiem should be performed a cappella however he provided a limited organ part for rehearsal purposes only which is included here.

Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Herbert Howells's Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis for the Gloucester service is one of his most popular choral settings. This sheet music is arranged for SATB Choir and Organ.   Herbert Howells  was a renowned English composer of church music in the Anglican evensong tradition best known for his 'Hymnus Paradisi' and as a teacher at the Royal College of Music. His lesser-known evening canticles include this piece: with its famoustreble duet opening the work it calmly progresses to an affirmation of the glory of heaven through distinctive Lydian harmony and soaring highs. Howells' 1955 Mass for Chorus Strings and Organ. Vocal score with keyboard reduction. An English Mass is a concert setting of the ordinary of the Mass in the English translation. Although it concludes with the Gloria as in a Prayerbook Communion service it was designed for concert use and is dedicated to Harold Darke and the St Michael's Singers. The original scoring was for strings and organ but a later version with woodwind and timpani is used this evening of this rarely heard work. Those familiar with the sound of Howells' church music will find the same textures here - long strands of expressive melody supported by rich harmony in thick textures and climaxes oftremendous ecstasy. Like so much of the English choral repertory the work begins and ends quietly achieving maximum intensity at various points in between.
