Nicholas Nye is a poem for young children written by Walter De La Mere (1873-1956) in 1931. It was to set to music for Unison Voices with Piano accompaniment by Llifon Hughes-Jones in 1942.Dr. Llifon Hughes-Jones (1918-1996) was a British composer conductor and teacher. He studied at the Manchester Music college (now the RNCM) and Trinity College London and later taught music for many years atSalford Grammar school. He wrote many works for the National Eisteddfod competitions in which he also adjudicated. He was one of the few composers who regularly wrote in Welsh and the musical culture of Wales is still indebtedto his contributions.

Their ranges and technical requirements are just right for the younger age groups and their lyrics as in Percy the Porcupine are perfectly gauged for their performers.Peter Jenkyns was a 20th century British composer singer and educator who wrote a series of songs for primary-aged children sensitively arranged and with appropriate lyrics. Jenkyns was the headmaster of two primary schools outside of London for whose choirs he composed songs for the St Albans’ Schools Music Festival. He was also a highly-regarded Gilbert and Sullivan patter-song singer and he founded a localGilbert & Sullivan society which is still thriving.

This Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B minor is less well known than Thiman’s service in G and is awaiting revival.Eric Thiman was a 20th century composer teacher and Organist who was also an advocate of amateur music-making. He was a prolific composer of church music and Piano and Organ works and his craftsmanship and gift for melody were much admired. He was director of music at the City Temple in London. As an educator he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and he wrote many books on harmony counterpoint and musical form.
