(2012)On the Air for Symphonic Band (by Grammy®-winning composer Michael Daugherty) is a music fantasy on Arturo Toscanini who conducted the NBC Symphony Orchestra in live radio broadcasts at Rockefeller Centerin New York Cityfrom 1937 to 1954. Born in Parma Italy Toscanini (1867-1954) was internationally recognized as the most gifted conductor of his time famous for his definitive interpretation of operatic and symphonicrepertoire. In 1936 Toscanini wasforced into exile at the height of his career for his refusal to become part of Mussolinis Fascist regime. The 70-year-old sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the island of Manhattan where hecast his magic spell upon all who heard him conduct.Under his baton the NBC Symphony was heard by millions of listeners and through his live radio broadcasts and recordings “Maestro Toscanini” became a householdname in America. Edvard Greig's 'Air,' in ABA form, is one of his most beautiful and tender works while the 'Rigaudon' is a characteristically playful French baroque-style dance. One of the best-known and most popular classical themes comes from Johann Sebastian Bach's Third Suite for Orchestra. The Air on a G-string has already been adapted for many instrumental combinations but arrangements for concert-band are a comparatively rare commodity. This void is filled with this highly competent wind-band setting by Jan Bosveld. Needless to say that the work is suitable for many occasions.

for Concert Band-Prairie Winds Festival is a fast happy-go-lucky opener. It is very carefully scored and cross-cued so that almost any size band can perform it. The Piccolo 2nd Oboe 2nd Bassoon Contra-Alto Clarinet 3rd Trombone and Double Bass parts are all optional but if you have these instruments it will sound more full.

Continuing with Michael's popular series of ?Celtic Air and Dance? arrangements the third installment opens with ?Red is the Rose? (or ?Loch Lomond?) in a flowing ballad treatment. The lively ?Bill Sullivan's Polka? follows and features various sections of the band. The flutes start things off followed by the rest of the woodwinds trumpets percussion low brass and finally the entire ensemble in an energetic finish.

Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune (?Prélude sur un air irlandais?) est basée sur l'air traditionnel Slane la version hymnique d?une mélodie irlandaise plus ancienne The Banks of the Bann. Cet acte de défi provoqua la fureur de Laoghaire un roi païen qui avait promulgué un édit interdisant d?allumer un feu autre que le feu royal sur la colline de Tara. Le feu royal célébrait la coutume païenne du retour du Printemps après l?Hiver du triomphe de la lumière (saison claire) sur la pénombre (saison sombre).Dans Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune des fragments de la mélodie font allusion au canevas futur de la pièce. Un autre thème écrit dans le style traditionnel domine le contexte avant de servir de contrechant lorsque la mélodie Slane se dévoile.

Air Pathétique est le second mouvement de la Sonate pour piano n° 8 en Do mineur Op. 13 ou Sonate « Pathétique » composée par Beethoven autour de 1797-98. Signe que cette œuvre lui inspirait une satisfaction particulière Beethoven l?avait surnommée sa 'Grande Sonate Pathétique'. Si l?on souhaite rester au plus près de la version originale on pourra choisir de ne pas jouer la partie de percussion ad libitum de cet arrangement de Robert van Beringen.
