An Opera in Three Acts-Adès?s third opera The Exterminating Angel premiered at the Salzburg Festival in July 2016. Based on Luis Buñuel?s surrealist classic El ángel exterminador the opera sees a collection of society?s grandees inexplicably trapped in a room.The libretto adapted from the original Buñuel-Alcoriza screenplay by the composer together with the director Tom Cairns brilliantly captures their descent into anarchy. Featuring a jaw-dropping 15 principals (who remain on stage for the majority of the piece) The Exterminating Angel is a true ensemble opera and the skill with which Adès delineates the many intricacies and undercurrents present over itsdensely-packed span (just under two hours plus interval) is breathtaking. Like the shipwrecked characters of The Tempest the cast of this new opera are held in a state of entrapment and dramatic stasis. Like the glittering high-society world of Powder Her Face the dinner party guests are denizens of a nightmarish world of aristocratic pretension.

Charles Gounod’s “Faust” secured its international recognition in the version as an entirely sung opera, which from thenceforth has largely obscured the fact that the work was originally composed with spoken dialogues. The early versions staged prior to the 1869 performance at the Paris Opéra containing substantial unknown material and with dialogues and melodramas are the subject of this new edition. (The third version “version opera” was published in a separate edition BA 8713 in 2016.) Even as the rehearsals were taking place at the Théâtre-Lyrique in 1858, during the first series of performances at the theatre in 1859, furthermore as the 1862 revival was approaching and during the performances on the smaller stage at the Place du Châtelet, there were constant changes and revisions. It is, thus, impossible to identify manifestly definitive versions. Nevertheless, by drawing on the entire source material now at hand (including fascinating material only recently discovered) and on the whole gamut of aspects communicated by the reception, Paul Prévost systematically presents us with a score laid out in two main versions in whose chronology constancy and change become transparent. With all the musical changes having been documented, the result is a practicable score for performances which reveals a still far too unknown “Faust” – a “Faust” that is rooted in the tradition of the opéra comique. Quite a few musical numbers are published as a score for the first time in this edition: the trio for Faust, Wagner and Siebel “À l’étude ô mon maître”, the duet of Valentin and Marguerite “Adieu, mon bon frère!”, Méphistophélès’ air “Maître Scarabée”, Siebel’s romance “Versez vos chagrins dans mon âme!”, Valentin’s air with chorus “Chaque jour, nouvelle affaire”, the chorus of witches “Un deux et trois”, and also seven melodramas whose missing or incomplete orchestration has been written for our edition. It was only recently that the long-lost second part of Faust’s original cavatina “Salut! demeure chaste et pure” was unearthed. Opérette-Bouffe En Un Acte-An opera buffa in one act by Offenbach in Germany mainly known under the title of 'Salon Pritzelsberger' which has enjoyed continuous popularity since its world premiere in 1860 until the present day. Since original performance materials were lost after the death of the composer several numbers like the overture and the legendary Trio italien could not be reconstructed in their original instrumentation. Therefore the access to the autograph of the score granted to the editor Jean-Christophe Keck by the descendants of Offenbach was of inestimable value in order to publish this gem of opera literature in an authentic source-critical edition for the first time. In theirvariant of the 'Bourgeois Gentleman' Offenbach and his co-author the Duc de Morny President of the Ministry of Internal Affairs under Napoleon III make fun not only of the airs and graces of the nouveaux riches but also of the musical star cult of the 19th century which apparently was hardly any different from that of today?

Poursuivant la petite histoire de l'art lyrique français, Germaine Tailleferre et Denise Centore évoquent maintenant le grand style réaliste tel que l'ont pratiqué, entre autres compositeurs, Gustave Charpentier et Alfred Bruneau, qui ont osé amener sur la scène lyrique, le langage de tous les jours et le costume du prolétaire. L'action de la Pauvre Eugénie se situe à Paris en 1905, dans un atelier de lingerie, celui de Madame Phémie, qui a un mari, Monsieur Ernesse, et trois ouvrières : Titine la gavroche, Paula la sentimentale, et Eugénie, l'héroïne de cette histoire, ou plutôt, de ces tranches de vie, selon le style de l'époque. C'est le pendant musical des Rougon-Macquart de Zola. Gégène n'apparaîtra qu'à l'heure du dénouement. Au début de l'opéra, dans l'atelier, les trois ouvrières travaillent à des jupons de linon ennuagés de dentelle, et la mauvaise humeur de Monsieur Ernest s'exprime à la cantonade. Madame Phémie, la femme de ce dernier, presse ses ouvrières et découvre qu'Eugénie mange du saucisson à l'ail. Eugénie est mise à la porte pour cette faute grave et, désespérée, elle veut se jeter dans la Seine. Titine et Paula, horrifiées, lui parlent de l'enfant qu'elle a eu avec Monsieur J. Duplan, qui devait l'épouser. Elle ne peut pas l'abandonner. Soudain, on frappe à la porte, et apparaît Gégène qui vient livrer un boa pour Madame Phémie. Indignation de Titine et Paula, Madame Phémie va mettre un boa alors qu'elle a mis à la porte une fille-mère ! Gégène, indigné, veut voir Eugénie, dont il tombe amoureux ! Tout est bien qui finit bien, Eugénie part avec Gégène, quittant ainsi celle qui l'exploitait.Le dernier opéra évoque la période d'Offenbach, il s'agit de Monsieur Petitpois achète un château. Les personnages, en costume Second Empire, évoluent dans un château médiéval proche de Romorantin. C'est le domaine ancestral de Monsieur le Duc de la Bombardière. Le duc a un fils, lieutenant hussard et joli garçon, une servante familière et dévouée, Cunégonde, nourrice d'Adélestan, et un notaire compétent, Maître Pointillard. Mais il n'a pas d'argent, tout au moins, commence-t-il à n'en avoir plus assez. Il lui faut vendre son château, et il attend la visite d'un acquéreur éventuel, Monsieur Petitpois. Il s'entretient de l'affaire avec son notaire, et ne dédaignera pas de prendre l'avis de Madame Cunégonde, sa servante, sitôt terminée l'ouverture de l'opéra. / Orchestre / Partition

Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) is one of the primary examples of Italian realism. It was both the best and worst thing that happened to Mascagni for its success - never to be repeated - weighed upon the composer all hislife. Based on Vergaâ??s play of the same name the libretto by Targioni-Tozzetti runs as follows: Lola and Turiddu had been lovers but when Turiddu went away to battle Lola married Alfio. When Turiddu returned he and Lolacontinued their affair secretly while he tried to make Lola jealous by starting a casual affair with Santuzza who fell genuinely in love with him. On Easter Sunday Santuzza realising the affair goes to see Turiddu'smother Lucia who keeps a tavern in the village. She is horrified to learn of her sonâ??s infidelity and leaves for the church just missing Turiddu who saunters in thinking of his night with Lola. He is surprised and annoyed tofind Santuzza there and the two begin to quarrel. Lola makes things worse by appearing and taunting Santuzza. Turiddu finally hits Santuzza and escapes.Santuzza tells Alfio of the illicit affair whereupon Alfio flies intoa rage and swears that he will avenge himself the code of honour requires Turiddu's blood to be shed. According to tradition he refuses a glass of wine from Turiddu indicating the dispute and the two make plans to fight.Rushing into the tavern Turiddu bids his mother her to take care of Santuzza. Mamma Lucia is alarmed and as he rushes off Santuzza enters and throws her arms around Lucia's neck just as a woman screams that Turiddu has beenkilled.This is the Schirmer edition of the Libretto in the original Italian with an English translation by Joseph Machlis.

This short opera (duration of 50 minutes) aptly designed for children to perform with modest resources is a version of the familiar tale though with certain adaptations. Cinderella is an au pair girl who arrives on the scene bytrain and there are three ugly sisters who get their just deserts in marriage to the appalling leaders of the armed forces. Writing for children in the Orkney Islands Davies has also included some local references: these can bechanged to suit other times and places. Musically the piece is a bright sequence of little songs choruses dialogue scenes and dances probably best suited to children between the ages of eight and twelve though the parts of theugly sisters can usefully be taken by boys with broken voices.Text only.Duration c. 50mins.

Currently a professor at the Lille Conservatoire she devotes herself to classical singing. As a vocalist herself this compilation of Decouvrir L'Opera Français is well-informed. The fifteenth full Opera from the prolific Hans Werner Henze and the first to feature a self-penned libretto. After the poems he wrote for his Songs from the Arabian Henze has produced this unusal tale through adaptingboth Arab and Persian legends and invoking the same half-real half-imaginary Arabia as the song cycle. The story itself is a fairy tale comedy with much in common with The Magic Flute. The orchestral arrangement is huge featuring quadruple wind five percussionists and a part for tape.

With a libretto written by Judith herself based on the cryptic supernatural short story Der blonde Eckbert by Ludwig Tieck. This one act pocket version of the opera makes use of a Chamber group rather than a fullorchestra and omits the chorus.'Eckbert and his wife Berthe live in seclusion in the Harz Moutains. One stormy night Eckbert's friend Walther arrives and to while away the time Berthe tells him her lifestory.Walther mysteriously knows a great deal about Berthe' s early life and Eckbert's suspicions grow eventually leading him to murder Walther during a hunting expediton.Consumed by terror and suspicion Eckbertretreats into seclusion and revisits the fairy-tale scenes of Berthe's childhood accompanied by a magical singing bird. The latest addition to the Novello Handel Edition. A stage work of 1745 based on John Milton's classical masque Comus created from a compilation of songs by Handel and Thomas Arne both pre-existing and original with the text adapted by John Dalton. This is the first ever complete publication of the work and is edited by Handel scholar Colin Timms. This work is for three or four Sopranos Mezzo-Soprano Tenor one or two Bass Soli and Orchestra. This edition is an 'important new contribution to scholarship with Colin Timms continuing the work of Anthony Hicks in putting together an edition of work from various sources'. There are 'somefine movements to be found by both composers not least the three airs and trio that Handel provided specially for performance in Exton Hall Rutland in 1745'.
