Authoritative Urtext edition of Johann Sebastien Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.5 in D Major BWV 1050. Includes the 'Early Version' BWV 1050a.The six Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1051 prized jewels of the world's musical heritage were written in 1721 during Bach?s appointment in Cöthen. Of the six works Bach originally wrote earlier versions of numbers 1 and 5 which differ not only with regard to articulation but also at times different tones different rhythms instrumentation and of course form. These Urtext publications taken from the New Bach Edition now give performers the possibility to play theseearlier versions perhaps even along side the version known today.

Violino piccolo pitch notation - notated the way it sounds-Violin solo part sounds at pitch (F major).Includes original version of the Sinfonia BWV 1046a.Authoritative Urtext edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.1 in F major BWV 1046.The six Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1051 prized jewels of the world's musical heritage were written in 1721 during Bach’s appointment in Cöthen.Of the six works Bach originally wrote earlier versions of numbers 1 and 5 which differ not only with regard to articulation but also at times different tones different rhythms instrumentation and of course form. These Urtext publications [BA5201-BA 5206] taken from the New Bach Edition now give performers the possibility to play these earlier versions perhaps even along side the version known today. In the earlier version of Concerto No.1 (BWV 1046a) which according to the editor of the edition Heinrich Besseler seems to have been Bach’s favorite among the six there is no violino piccolo part to be found and the violin concerto-like 3rd movement as well as the Polonaise movement are also absent. In nearly every bar the articulation in one instrument or another differs from the later version; for example the 16th-note slurs in bars 1 and 2 of the horns are missing in the later score the oboe slurs and trills in m.12 are also not to be found. The later version has the cello seperated from the continuo which means that the 16ths in m.7 are not to be played by the Violone grosso.

(+)
'Acquainted with Night' is a cycle of six songs for alto and strings harp and timpani. The texts are all concerned with different aspects of night. The first song ‘Lullaby’ to a poem by Beaumont and Fletcher seeks to evokethe ‘care-charming’ powers of sleep. The second a setting of Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted with the night’ is concerned with the lonely world of a strange city at night and the music is characterised by an insistently repeatedfigure in the accompaniment. The third song contrasts the calmness of the night with the turbulence in a lover’s mind - the poem is by the Earl of Surrey. ‘Out in the dark’ a poem by Edward Thomas is the text of the fourthsong. It is in the form of a scherzo and deals with the mystery and strangeness of night and as the poet puts it the ‘might’ of night. It is as the poet says a hymn to night and the chordal nature of the accompanimentsuggests this quality. This song leads directly into the last which is in fact a reprise of the opening ‘Lullaby’ so completing the cycle.

(+)
Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programme note: In 1983 Hans Abrahamsen wrote the first seven of his Ten Studies for Piano. In the early eighties most composers who wrote for the piano were still making strenuous efforts to distance themselves from the instrument?s romantic past for example treating it as a percussion instrument rather than exploiting its expressive ?singing? potential. The piano?s modern identity as a mechanical rational emotionally cool instrument is reflected in Abrahamsen?s studies 5 7; but in the first four studies Abrahamsen allows the piano to?recollect? its past: especially what the composer calls ?the golden German romantic time full of expression night timelessness dream and the irrational?. Accordingly these first four studies were given German one might specifically say Schumanesque - titles: Traumlied (?Dreamsong?) Sturm (?Storm?) Arabeske (?Arabesque?) and Ende (?End?). While Abrahamsen was in no way dissatisfied with the first four Studies as piano music he soon felt the urge to expand them in both time and space. In their new identity as Four Pieces for Orchestra created between 2000-2003 the original studies nearly doubled in length while the forces required expanded from one soloist to an orchestra of Mahlerian/Straussian dimensions including instruments beloved by the late-romantics: Wagner tubas bass trumpet guitar mandolin and the hammer used so memorably in Mahler?s Sixth Symphony and Alban Berg?s Three Pieces for Orchestra. The results are not so much ?arrangements? of the four piano studies more recompositions. A helpful comparison might be made with certain painters: Cézanne portraying the same mountain from different angles; or Monet obsessively returning to Rouen Cathedral in different lights and weather conditions. Abrahamsen himself remembers an important visit to the Munch Museum in Oslo where he saw how Munch painted the same subject

Commissioned by the French Government and Musica Strasbourg. As the title suggests Trois rivières is divided into three separate sections. The first part introduces all the instrumental colours used in the piece. The rhythmicaspect is here nearly eliminated giving room for the timbral scales colours resonances attacks and textures to come to the fore. The instruments come from all members of the percussion family but unpitched instruments aregiven a primary role. The second part adds a rhythmic aspect to the nuances of colour and texture as an ostinato is developed in markedly varying directions. The last part is an epilogue recalling components of the twopreceding parts. Here earlier aspects of the material are reorganised and placed in different relationships to each other. The voices of the percussionists act together as an extension of the instruments being used to createeither rhythmically free textures or strictly notated rhythms. They are treated instrumentally combining to create rhythms and timbres. The poem 'La nuit de lune sur le fleuve' (Moonlit night on the river) by the Chinese poet LiPo (701-762) constitutes the material for the voices which are amplified and further enhanced throughout.

Fanfarer-Danmarks Radio for Orchestra BVN 351 was composed by Rued Langgaard in 1948. Instrumentation: 3.2.2.2/4.3.3.1/timp/2 perc/org/str. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk This extremely short orchestral piece was composed 7 May1948 in Ribe. Exactly between 5:45 and 6:45 in the morning(“normal time”). Rued Langgaard indicates the time of dayin both the sketch for the composition and the fair copy of thescore. Fair-copying of the score took place on 10 May 4:30 to6:00 in the morning (“summertime”) after it should be noted Langgaard had taken his obligatory morning constitutional inRibe (he suffered from insomnia and arose in the early morninghours). After the work’s final measure Langgaard wrote:“Short razor-sharp line of thought in music excluding allextraneous ‘developmental’ fussiness and with lightning fastmovement in all the parts”. The same day 10 May he sent thescore as program suggestion to the State Broadcasting Servicein Copenhagen under the title Denmark’s Radio Fandfare forGrand Orchestra – “fandfare” as a sarcastically meant spellingmistake with an allusion to “the Devil” (fanden = the Devil inDanish). Langgaard had as is known an ambivalent relationshipwith the State Broadcasting Service. The work was not acceptedand the score was therefore returned to Langgaard whonevertheless submitted it again. The State Broadcasting Serviceclearly regarded the piece as a joke from the composer’s side. When Langgaard died in 1952 the unperformed score was tobe found in broadcasting corporation’s music

Score-John Adams emerged in the last decades of the twentieth century as one of the most influential and widely performed American composers since Copland. 'The Chairman Dances' is a 'foxtrot for orchestra' that emerged as an offshootof the composer's 1986 political opera 'Nixon in China'. It has become one of the composer's most popular works. In this piece from the third act of the Opera protocol and ceremony are forgotten as the audience is ledinto the apparent privacy of the characters' bedrooms to hear their intimate discussions. Each sings of his or her current personal concerns while at some level the couples (Dick and Pat Chairman and Madam Mao) connect with eachother on the emotional plane of nostalgia. The Nixons reminisce about their early pre-public married lives. The Maos look back to their youthful idealism and budding romance and foxtrot together to the wistful tune that formsthe basis of this composition. The chugging and coloristic flashes that begin the work give way to the dance theme proper in the strings. The work 'runs out' instead of ending in imitation of the hand-wound gramophone which hadaccompanied the dancing of the Maos in earlier happier times.First performed in January 1986 by the Milwaukee Smphony Orchestra the piece was commissioned by the National Endowment For The Arts.

(+)
This study score is based on the critical edition of ?The Barber Of Seville? edited by Patricia B. Brauner and published in 2008 as part of the series ?Works of Gioachino Rossini?. But who needs a new critical edition of ?The Barber Of Seville?? The opera has been performed in theatres throughout the world since 1816 and has never been absent from the repertoire. There are two reasons for a critical new edition: firstly none of the early editions satisfy modern demands for a scholarly-critical edition. Secondly there is a wealth of previously unpublished material relating to this opera of great interest to both scholars andperformers. Thus the famous overture which Rossini had already used in his earlier opera ?Aureliano in Palmira? differs noticeably from earlier editions in many places. The new edition enables performers to perform the overture either in its original scoring (as in ?Aureliano in Palmira?) which includes two Flutes two Oboes and Timpani or in the scoring for the subsequent opera ?The Barber Of Seville? (with just one flute one oboe and no timpani).A series of appendices contain music and information which have been included in no other edition of the opera to date.- Takes into account all original sources also including five manuscripts with Rossini?s autograph ornamentation.- Takes into consideration the full extent of Rossini?s personal notational characteristics.- With a detailed foreword (Eng/Ital)

Nacht Und Trompeten by Hans Abrahamsen (1981). Programme note: The piece is dedicated to Hans Werner Henze from whose request the piece arose. The music unfolds in a space in which the memory of the earlier music has the same reality as the music of today. But the music of the memory is naturally distant and vague whereas the music of today is present and gesticulated. In the opening section the past and the present are clearly separated but during the piece this balance is lifted as 'the music of the past' (trumpet signals Sicilian melodicity romantic Pathos strawinskian neo-classicism) in a dynamic andoften dramatic surrealistic play with minimalism and modernism of today is unravelled. The complete score of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Sinfonia No.99 In E Flat edited from the autograph authentic copies and early editions by H.C. Robbins Landon. This is the Full Orchestra Score composed in 1793 as the first of six symphonies written for Haydn’s second visit to England. It is a typically impressive symphony four movements full of musicality and excitement despite its characteristic slow opening. This piece is warm and expressive with a melancholy Adagio which seems to reflect the death of one of Haydn’s close friend earlier that year.

Serenade für 13 Instrumente-An announcement in the Wiener-Zeitung read: ?Concert. Today [23 March 1784] Herr [Anton] Stadler Sr. presently in the service of His Majesty the Emperor will hold a concert for his own benefit at the Royal Imperial National Court Theatre in which among other select pieces he will present a grand work for wind-band of a quite special character composed by Herr Mozart.? That this was almost certainly four movements from the present Serenade in B-flat major K.361 is suggested by an account of the occasion published some months later which states ?Today I heard a composition by Herr Mozart in 4 movements for wind ensemble . . . comprising 13 instruments: 4 horns 2oboes 2 bassoons 2 clarinetts 2 basset horns and a contrabass viol. . . .?Much music of the serenade-divertimento-cassation-Nachtmusik type was written in a light style and intended for social occasions rather than formal concerts. In such a context K.361 is striking for its seriousness of artistic content its length (seven movements lasting nearly an hour) and its extended instrumentation (most wind-band music of the period calls for five to eight or nine players not thirteen). If the work was not conceived in the first instance as a concert work its potential as such must have been recognized early on by Mozart or Stadler.- Urtext of the New Mozart Edition- Parts (BA5331-22) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP312) available for sale

Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Only eleven of the over one hundred symphonies by Joseph Haydn are composed in a minor key. Written in the early 1770s, the Symphony Hob.I:52 in C minor bears some similarities to the slightly earlier Symphony in E minor Hob.I:44 (?Mourning?, BA 10988), not only because they both are composed in a minor key but also because they both feature a pair of horns tuned at different pitches. Haydn seems to have experimented with differently tuned horns inspired by an article in Johann Adam Hiller?s journal ?Musikalische Nachrichten und Anmerkungen? of July 1770, which suggested to tune the horns a minor third apart in order to expand the total horn range. While Haydn followed this recommendation just like that in the E-minor symphony, he chose to have the horns tuned a major sixth apart (high C and E-flat) in the outer movements of the C-minor symphony Hob. I:52, resulting in an unusual horn sound within the orchestral texture. In continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and G. Score and Parts-Charles Ives' Postlude In F for Orchestra. Score and parts. The Postlude in F composed in 1895 is Charles Ives' earliest known work for large Orchestra. It is based on anearlier Organ piece which Ives performed at the Baptist Church in Danbury Conneticut on May 11 1890 (at the age of fifteen; on the cover page of the full score Ives mistakenly gave 1892 for the year of the Organcomposition). The version for Orchestra was probably produced as an orchestration assignment for a class of Horatio Parker Ives' teacher at Yale College. Ives recalled that the 'New Haven Orchestra' - that is the New Haven Symphony Orchestra organised by Parker in 1895- read through the work in 1896. The Postlude in F which was also preperation for work on the First Symphony (its first movement also completed in1895) contains some suprisingly mature and beautiful writing especially in the magical closing pages. - Kenneth D. Singleton.
