Sonata No. 1, Op. 5 Two Preludes, Op. 52 Two Meditations, Op. 57 A Quiet Voluntary, Op. 70 Basil Harwood's organ music takes a chronological journey through the composer's creative years. This journey begins with the Organ Sonata No. 1 in C sharp minor, op. 5 and ends with Quiet Voluntary for Evensong, op. 70, composed in 1946 when the composer was eighty-seven. In the intervening years came many and varied compositions often demanding an instrument of ample resources together with a player equal to their somewhat formidable technical demands. Displaying a fine sense of craftsmanship, they represent an important contribution to the organ repertoire. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. In this volume with the Toccatas (and Fugues) as well as individual works the Swiss organist Jean-Claude Zehnder has amply proven his mettle as a Bach specialist here. Of particular interest in this book is the Canzona in d BWV 588. Written before 1707, this early work is found in a contemporary copy by Johann Gottlieb Preller with embellishments, fingerings and a closing cadenza - this version is printed in the Appendix. Similarly, the print of the early version of the Passacaglia BWV 582 is likely to meet with great interest. Description Widely regarded as the culmination of French romanticism on the organ, Widor's symphonies include some of the most frequently performed and recorded works in the modern organ repertoire. From 1772 onward, Mozart wrote 17 short single movement works called Epistle Sonatas , designed to be played in the Eucharist service between the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle Sonata in C (K.336) was the last of these, written in 1780. Shortly afterwards the Archbishop decreed that a motet or hymn should be sung instead, and they fell into disuse. The Epistle Sonata in C was originally scored for two Violins, Basso Continuo, and Baroque Organ. It has been arranged for solo Organ (with pedals) by Nigel Davison. / Orgue

Par GUILMANT ALEXANDER. The eight sonatas of Guilmant may well lay claim to classical rank. Originally conceived for the French organs of Cavaille-Col, they are sufficiently broad in conception as to lose little, if anything, in their interpretation on English and American instruments. At the time of their composition (1874-1909) they brought to the Organ a new sense which had been too little cultivated by organists. This volume is edited by A. Austria ?s imperial court chapel was active far beyond the confines of Vienna . It developed a rich musical tradition of its own, with composers of the stature of Heinrich Isaac , Jacob Hassler , Johann Jacob Froberger , and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer .

This volume consists entirely of première publications from the ?uvre of composers working at the imperial court during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including the complete keyboard output of Giovanni Valentini and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and a Toccata 2 di toni in g ( FbWV 130) by Johann Jacob Froberger.

Altogether it contains twenty-two compositions with a detailed preface, many facsimiles, and a critical commentary. The pieces range from easy to moderately difficult and are equally suitable for use in church services or concert performance.
