The majority of works by Czerny are confusing to most Piano academics. Out of these the following are still the classics: Op. 139 261 299 335 337 355 365 453 553 599 636 718 740 755 802 821 823 834 et 849. Each one of these volumes contains numerous exercises some contain more than a hundred. It is of course impossible for aspiring pianists to study them all and it is difficult for Piano teachers to sort them out and organise them into the ones that could be the most interesting in a logical and progressive way.This is exactly what Heinrich Germer has tried to do. Germer an outstanding teacher and German pianist was born in Sommerdorfin 1839 and died in Dresde in 1913. He was 18 years old when Cerny died at the age of 66 years. Germer had great luck in knowing the first generation of pianists he was studying and saw the need to reorganise this huge quantity of didactic material. Germer's success was down to the fact that his systematic organisation of Czerny's work split into three volumes continues to be the three used by contemporary piano teachers. Germer did not make hardly any changes to Czerny collections. And there is more - he adds dynamic text for phrasing and pedals so that there is more musicality in the books making the exercises more enjoyable to play. He changes some archaic armatures for more modern ones. He revises Czerny's method on regrouping notes by placing bar values making reading rhythms a lot easier. He corrected numerous printing errors. In the longest pieces he adds capital letters to indicate the beginning of each movement same or part period which helps pupils to know blocks it would be better for him to practise. The revision work undergone by Germer introduces order and the results obtained for the Piano teachers that use them are very satisfying.

One of the least known of the great Russian pianists of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, Alexander Siloti (1863-1945) was one of the most influential and progressive. As a concert promoter, he introduced the music of dozens of composers to the Russian public in the famous Siloti Concerts of 1903-1917, including Albeniz, Debussy, de Falla, Delius, Elgar, Enesco, Mahler and Schoenberg. A student of Liszt (and one of the teachers of Rachmaninoff), Siloti is a central figure in the development of the great age of the piano virtuoso. As with many of his colleagues, transcribing and arranging existing music for the piano was a major part of Siloti's activity, and since he madeno recordings, his published transcriptions are one of the few existing keys we have to his musical taste and philosophy. In an extended biographical essay, Dr. Charles Barber explores this issue and writes cogently about the style and influence of this remarkable man. The Alexander Siloti Collection is dominated by Siloti's remarkable transcriptions and arrangements of the music of J.S. Bach, notable particularly for their pianistic character and faithfulness to the unique genetic code of Bach's design. Gabriel Fauré's Nocturnes nos. 1-8. Gabriel Fauré was born in Pamiers (Ariège) on 12 May 1845. Owing to his precocious musical gifts he was able at the age of nine to enter the celebrated Niedermeyer School founded in Paris to train organists and choirmasters. For about ten years he received instruction of great quality centred mainly on the study of sacred music and the great classic masterpieces into which he was initiated notably by Camille Saint-Saëns his Piano teacher. As soon as he left the school Fauré began a brilliant career as an organist. In 1896 he succeededThéodore Dubois as an organist at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris and was appointed professor of composition at the Conservatory where his pupils included Ravel Koechlin Enesco and Schmitt. Meanwhile he had met Liszt in Weimar and had been initiated into Wagner’s art which however never really influenced him. Appointed director of the Conservatory in 1905 after Théodore Dubois’ resignation a member of the French Institute and music critic Fauré spent his last years in solitude suffering from an irreversible deafness that obliged him to resign from the Conservatory in 1920. He died in Paris on 4 th November 1924. The music of this sometimes misunderstood composer who wrote in nearly all genres (except Organ music) is of great refinement. An enemy of bombast Fauré put his elegant counterpoint a highly individual harmonic style unpredictable turns of phrase and the secret of an unusual musical sensitivity at the service of music that is both varied and of very high quality.

A selection of jazz pieces arranged for Keyboard and Guitar (both chord symbols and tablatures are included). Solemn Melody was originally scored for Organ and Strings and later adapted by the composer for full Orchestra. There also exists a concert band arrangement and one for solo Organ. H. Walford Davies was a composer and musical director at the University of Wales as well as Organist at among others Temple Church where his student Leopold Stokowski (later one of the leading conductors of the 20th century) assisted him. Davies is best remembered for this work and for the march ‘RAF March Past’. Davies also did much to educate the public about serious music through radio programmes and his writings.

'The idea for a Piano concerto for the Boston Symphony was instigated by Robert Levin the great Mozart scholar and Pianist. The idea was evidently embraced by BSO Artistic Administrator Tony Fogg and supported by MusicDirector James Levine. Much of the concerto was composed during the summer of 2004 at the American Academy in Rome in a secluded studio hidden within the Academy walls. While much of the composing took place farfrom home the concerto comes out as a particularly “American” piece shot through with vernacular elements. As in many of my compositions simple familiar musical ideas are the starting point. A shape a melodicfragment a rhythm a chord a texture or a sonority may ignite the appetite for exploration. How such simple insignificant things can be altered elaborated extended and combined becomes the exciting challenge ofcomposition. I also want the finished work to breathe in a natural way to progress spontaneously organically moving toward a transformation of the musical substance in ways unimaginable to me when I began thejourney. Transformation is the goal with the intention of achieving an altered state of perception and exposure that I am otherwise unable to achieve. “Chiavi in mano” – the title of the concerto – is themantra used by automobile salesmen and realtors in Italy: Buy the house or the car and the keys are yours. But the more pertinent reason for the title is the fact that the piano writing is designed to fall “under thehand” and no matter how difficult it may be it remains physically comfortable and devoid of stress. J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a German Baroque composer who is revered for the originality and skill of his contrapuntal and harmonic techniques. Although he spent most of his life working as an organist and choirmaster he was familiar with many different keyboard instruments. He used this knowledge when composing his six French Suites in 1722-1725.French Suite No.2 in C Minor (BWV813) is a collection of sevenshort dance-style pieces for solo Piano Harpsichord or Clavichord.This popular edition from the highly-regarded musicologist Orlando Morgan is designed with the performer in mind and is still seen as the bestedition available for students today. It includes phrasing fingering and annotations.
