It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996. In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from the composer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with sonic effects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. This great work is really nice to play and will enlighten the audience. It is divided into three parts: I. “Allegro ma non troppo” is strongly rhythmic and syncopated.It includes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone and is written as a tribute to Jazz music. II. “Andante” also includes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone but at the end of the section. It is reminiscent of slower blues ballads. III. This part features few sections by the Solo Saxophone but is specially highlighted its ending in a bright and fast finale. This volume features the score and parts for all the instruments. Born in France in 1932 Roger Boutry received numerous prizes including those for Piano Composition and Conducting. He received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1954. His career was quite successful alternating between Harmony professor composer and conductor. He also received numerous prizes for his incredible compositions.

E flat major-The Concerto For Alto Saxophone And Orchestra is Alexander Glazunov’s last work; since its first performance in 1934 it has become part of the standard Saxophone repertoire. The sole surviving autograph manuscript is the hand-written dedication score given by Glazunov to Sigurd Raschèr (Raschèr was the founder and leader of the well-known and innovative Raschèr Saxophone Quartet).This score contains the original version of the work without the alterations which were made in the proofs to the orchestral score as well as the full version of the composer’s cadenza which was later shortened. The autograph manuscript also containssome performance markings by Raschèr.The correspondence between Raschèr and Glazunov documents the composer’s thoughts on the work and his recommendations about the size of the accompanying String Orchestra. Concertino Da Camera written in 1935 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a small concerto for Alto Saxophone and eleven instruments: Flute Bassoon Oboe Horn Trumpet and Strings. This concertino in two movements Allegro con moto and Larghetto – Animato Molto is dedicated to the saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is notable for its large use of the Alto-Saxophone. It can be technically-challenging and has a strong lyrical part. This volume features the parts for all instruments as well as the full score. Its author Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in1919. He composed many symphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Divertissement' (1930). He was also in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera. This concerto has some similarities with his Flute Concerto (1934) also published by Alphonse Leduc.

This version and the one for Flute and Piano are the ones most commonly used. Jack Brymer premièred this work originally called 'Sopsonare' in 1973 at the American School at St. John's Wood playing on Michael Krein's Selmer soprano saxophone. This Sonata the first composition for saxophone by Colin Cowles was inspired by the acquisition of a soprano saxophone whilst teaching in Hemel Hempstead in the early 1970s. Although having played on a simple system soprano as a boy (an instrument borrowed from and taught him by his father) this re-introduction to the instrument was to kindle a life-long love of the complete saxophone family and the composition of an almost endless 'library' of works for it at all levels. It was also at a time whenthe composers had made recent acquaintance with the eminent saxophonist Peter Ripper and had been introduced to the saxophone quartet by the recently formed London Saxophone Quartet whose leader Paul Harvey was to play this Sonata and the Elegy for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra. He in fact premiered the latter work which Jack Brymer then played in public on a number of occasions. It was recorded by Peter Ripper with the composer at the piano at the BBC Maida Vale Studios. It is a totally non-esoteric work but like so much of the composer's music it is fun and approachable bearing repetition without becoming tedious. The composer has always favoured the Bb saxophones (soprano and tenor) which is reflected by his output. Of particular note are: • Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra• In Memoriam for Tenor Saxophone and String Orchestra• Sonata for Tenor Saxophone and Piano • Three Bala Sketches for Tenor Saxophone and Piano. This Sonata for Soprano Saxophone and Piano and the Elegy for Soprano Saxophone and Strings are particular favourites of the composer.

Par KULENTY HANNA. I composed Aisthetikos Duo for soprano saxophone and piano immediately after Aisthetikos for soprano saxophone, piano and orchestra. I hit on the idea of preparing a work that could be performed more often. I was approached with a request to write such a version of Aisthetikos by its first performers: Magdalena and Bartlomiej Dus. A composition for two soloists and orchestra is no simple matter, and concert performances need a lot of preparation, while it is just easier for a duet. The soloists’ parts are slightly modified in the area of the orchestra part, but it is essentially the same work, written in the composition technique I call musique surréalistique, which I have been using for several years. During his long career Harvey was bass clarinet of the Scottish National Orchestra freelanced in London for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and many West End musicals as well as performing on many film and television recordingsessions. He was co-founder and leader of the Londong Saxophone Quartet and Professor of Clarinet at the Royal Military School of Music. He has been recognized for his contributions to the world of the clarinet. Among his many commissions is a work for Bass Clarinet Choir which was given its premiere by a choir of 149 bass clarinetists conducted by Harvey himself.

Par SAMITZ NICO. Nico Samitz has been composing for chamber ensembles since his school days.
