A Caribbean Sailing Trip. With this composition in a rumba style, Peter Kleine Schaars invites us to enjoy a relaxed sailing trip in the waters of the Caribbean. The feeling of freedom on the boat is mirrored by an extensive melody surrounded by a palette of colourful harmonies ? the shades of the water ? while the clever percussion sets the course of the ship. Who wouldn?t dream of such an adventure? Although the musical themes and accompaniments have been constructed from combinations of rhythmic cells that occur less often, the composition sounds very natural and flowing. Assuming the rhythmic cells 1 to 8 are part of the basic skills of your band, in this composition, the accent rather lies on cells 9 to 13. The instrumentation is created in such a way that these ?new cells? occur in all parts, so that all musicians of the band become familiar with this rhythmic development.

Missa Brevis est une messe pour Orchestre d?Harmonie et Choeur composée à la demande du Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir. : Philippe Pfisterer) de Guebwiller en France à l?occasion des célébrations dumillénaire de la naissance du Pape Léon IX à Éguisheim. La création mondiale a eu lieu le 23 juin 2002 sous la direction du compositeur et a été diffusée en direct sur la chaîne de télévision nationale France 2. Les différentes parties de cettemesse (Kyrie Gloria Credo Sanctus Benedictus et Agnus Dei) conviennent autant à la liturgie catholique qu?à la liturgie protestante. Missa Brevis peut être interprétée dans différentes combinaisons instrumentales. Ellepeut être jouée dans une version purement instrumentale où les cuivres prennent en charge la partie vocale. En tel cas il est conseillé de placer les cuivres à l?écart de la formation (sur une estrade par exemple) de façon à reproduire l?idée dedeux groupes indépendants. Dans le cadre d?une interprétation avec un grand Choeur les cuivres jouent un rôle de soutien. Leurs nuances doivent alors être adaptées dans la mesure où elles ont été écrites à l?origine pour une version instrumentale.Il est également possible de ne pas faire intervenir les cuivres et de privilégier le Choeur. Pour accompagner de petits ensembles vocaux il faut opter pour une formation instrumentale réduite voire même un Quatuor (instrumentation au choix). Pourl?interprétation de cette messe l?un des choix proposés ci-dessus s?impose. Il existe néanmoins une alternative qui consiste à interpréter cette oeuvre en combinant ces options (vocales / instrumentales). Cela peut être bénéfique tant d?un point devue artistique (variante) que pratique dans le cas où le Choeur n?a travaillé que deux mouvements de la messe. Si le chef dispose de deux formations complètes (Choeur et Orchestre d?Harmonie) il peut varier l?instrumentation selon ses préférences. Àce moment-là il peut confier un rôle d?accompagnement et non de soutien aux cuivres de sa formation. Les combinaisons suivantes peuvent être formées :1. Choeur de Clarinettes (de la Clarinette Mib à la Clarinette Basse)2. Choeur de Clarinettes + Saxophones3. Cuivres (Bugles Cors Barytons / Euphoniums Basses)4. Cuivres (2 Trompettes / 2 Trombones)5. The composer writes: The piece is in three movements: the first movement present three different types of music juxtaposed meeting in the end in a chaotic brutal sound. The second movement is the longest consisting of an expressive opening and a gradual build-up of an exstatic motoric motion until a climax; the opening then comes back and the music dies away. The third movement is a very short pianissimo echo. The primary focus of the piece is the element of sound. Polyphony is absent and the instruments are always 'packed together' playing in a very narrow register merging into a dense monophonic or occasionally heterophonic sound. The harmony is based on dronesand the tonality is G# modulating only once (in the climax of the second movement) and all the motivic material is derived from a kind of G#-Phrygian scale. All in all this gives associations to the sound-world of oriental ethnic music.

Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH / JONES NATHAN (Arr.). Tchaikovsky composed his twelve character pieces for piano, The Seasons, while he was writing his popular ballet, Swan Lake. Each piece in The Seasons depicts a different month of the year in Russia. The original publication of September: The Hunt included an epigraph at the start of the piece-a small poem by Alexander Pushkin. This energetic arrangement for symphonic band by Nathan Jones opens with an octave fanfare between the winds and brass. Tchaikovsky\'s colorful harmony speaks here, with passing chromaticism adding color to the music. The fanfare theme is transformed in the quiet central section, still shifting to the minor mode with short solo passages for flute, bassoon, trumpet, xylophone and oboe (cued in flutes). Track Clear ~ Laisser passez !-Eduard Strauss the third son of Johann Strauss the Elder was born on March 15 1835 in Vienna. Originally Eduard looked for employment in the diplomatic service but he also studied music theory. He became a harpist in the Strauss orchestra in 1855. In 1862 he joined his two famous brothers Johann Jr. and Josef as a conductor of the family orchestra. Like that of his two brothers his musical output was prolific: he wrote over 320 separate dances and marches. Apart from the exuberant Bahn Frei (Track Clear) which he wrote in 1869 and a handful of other fast polkas (he excelled in this particular dance form) his music is not as well known as that of his brothers.

Waldkircha in Musica-Jubilate’s main theme comes from the Gregorian chant on the Psalm Jubliate Deo omnis terra. The work itself was inspired by the sacredhistory of the Waldkirch (a forest village) community located on the Swiss/German boarder. It tells a tale of the Irish and Scottish monks who build the first wooden church at the site of what is now Waldkirch of the dramatic events good and bad that have taken place over the centuries and of the flourishing community that has withstood the trials of time.
