Based on Gloria-The beginning and ending fanfare sets the tone for an exciting arrangement by Vicki Tucker Courtney of the well-known French carol Gloria. A syncopated accompaniment along with the vocal meter change from 4/4 to 6/8 in the choruscreates energy throughout the music. The original chorus transitions to the familiar chorus building to a triumphant ending. The available brass ensemble parts add power and finesse. Third Part Of The Orchestral Triptych Triduum-Symphony: ‘Vigil’ (1997) is the last of three interrelated works forming Triduum commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra the other works being The World’s Ransoming for cor anglais and orchestra and the Cello Concerto (both 1996). All three relate to the historical events and religious liturgies of the Easter Triduum namely Maundy Thursday Good Friday and the Easter Vigil. The symphony’s first movement ‘Light’ deals with the promise of a glimmer of light in the darkness. The central movement ‘Tuba insonet salutaris’ (Sound the trumpet of salvation) is based on the Exsultet melody sung at the Easter Vigil described by Mozart as probably the mostbeautiful ever written. The final movement ‘Water’ opens savagely but subsides towards the presentation of two conflicting principal materials a wild ecstatic dance followed by a slower more mysterious texture leading to a climax and a luminous floating close.

Score-Rossano Galante's The Redwoods for Orchestra.The Redwoods was commissioned in 1998 by the North Tonawanda High School Band under the direction of Norman Alexander.Thiswork inspired by the beauty power and majesty of the Redwood - the most remarkable of trees - begins with a heroic-romantic Trumpet melody accompanied by Woodwind arpeggios punctuated by Brass rhythms. After a transition theopening melody is followed by the rich lush main theme (m.29) which is stated by the Horns and Woodwinds.After the main theme has undergone variations in orchestration a new section follows (m.65) with the upperWoodwinds playing a second delicately stated theme reminiscent of a music box. The new theme is heard just once more (m.73) but played in a heroic manner by the Trumpets and Trombones in juxtaposition of the original 'music box'statement.The main theme recapitulates in a similar heroic manner (m.82) and as each theme returns it is heard with a change of instrumentation and accompaniment. After the final thematic statement a Brass fanfare bringsus to the end of the piece which culminates in a grand climax.

Ten Secret Doors - Suite For Orchestra was composed by Swedish composer Britta Byström in 2010. Commissioned by Västerås Sinfonietta and premiered by VS conducted by Johannes Gustavsson on April 14 2011. Programme note: Each of the ten movements in the orchestral suite Ten Secret Doors contains a transformation a stage-change in sound meant to give a feeling that the music 'slips away'. In the first movement this transformation is achieved by a sudden orchestral sound change from tutti to solo. There follow changes from muted sound to open sound from wind section to string section from bow play to pizzicato play. In the last movement there is a trumpet solo that is first played on stage then off stage - a transformation from close to distant. I pictured the ending of every movement as the opening rather than the closing of a door.In this work there is also a small musical quotation from 'Von fremden Ländern und Menschen' (from Robert Schumann's famous Kinderszenen). This phrase snuck into music as a greeting from another suite characterized by many short movements of flightiness and lightness.(Britta Byström)
