This theoretical book is meant to improve contemporary jazz styles and techniques for all players of modern jazz. This study investigates jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock's seven albums recorded as a bandleader for Blue Note Records between 1962 and 1969. Recorded during Hancock's tenures with Donal Byrd and Miles Davis, his early works are highly mature musical conceptions, with all the major elements of Hancock's personal musical style already present. A mixed-methods approach combining sever forms of qualitative data analysis is used to identify the formal construction, the musical meanings, and the cultural significance of this body of music. The study surveys the thirty-six compositions that comprise these seven albums, and selects for in-depth analysis seven pieces that are proportionally representative of the formal characteristics of this larger repertoire: The Maze, The Pleasure Is Mine, Jack Rabbit, One Finger Snap, Little One, Toys, and I Have A Dream. Hancock's improvisations on these repretative compositions are transcribed, and each improvisation and composition is analyzed for its historical context and significance of each recording is examined through interviews with persons involved in the original recording process, as well as other jazz musicians and scholars with deep knowledge of Hancock's life, music and oeuvre. Aesthetic analyses, informed by the theories of of Kivy and Elliot, investigate the expressive or representational qualities of each composition, and examine how formal musical elements contribute to these expressive or representational qualities. Formal analyses examine elements of Hancock's compositional and improvisational style. The study concludes the Hancock's compositions and improvisations of the period exhibit a number of consistent style elements, such as sophisticated harmonic and rhythmic superimposition, that were very important influences on jazz pianists of the following generation.

Obwohl die Variationen vorwiegend von rationalen Kompositionsmitteln in Anlehnung an Reihentechniken Schonbergs und des spaten Strawinsky gepragt sind, ist in ihnen das spielerische musikantische Element und der tanzerische Charakter, wenn auch immer wieder anders gebrochen, erhalten geblieben. (Helmut Lachenmann, 1985) Das burgerliche Denken ist gekennzeichnet durch ein hochentwickeltes System von Verdrangungsmechanismen, welche die Isolation, Entfremdung, Angst und Sprachlosigkeit des Individuums uberspielen sollen. Unser Kulturbetrieb ist ein wesentlicher Teil dieses Verdrangungssystems. In diesem Sinn hat er die Tradition in Beschlag genommen: die Illusion einer in Wirklichkeit langst verlorenen gemeinsamen Verstandigungsbasis bewahrt er durch die Konservierung und Fetischisierung historischer asthetischer Kategorien und daran gebundener Wertvorstellungen; als Synonym fur tabuisierte Konvention bildet Tradition heute einen verraterischen Teil dieser unserer Wirklichkeit. Die Funf Variationen uber ein Thema von Franz Schubert sind 1956, also noch vor meinem Studium bei Nono, entstanden. In ihnen ist jener oben ausgefuhrte gesellschafts- und kulturbetriebskritische Ansatz noch kaum erkennbar, eher keimhaft verborgen. Ich mag das Stuck so, wie einer vielleicht Souvenirs aus seiner Jugend mag. Robert Saxton 's Hortus Musicae , Book 1 was commissioned by Ian Richie for the 2013 City of London Festival with funds provided by the John S. Cohen Foundation. The first performance was given by Clare Hammond on June 24th 2013 at the church of St Mary Le Bow. The title, less 'literal' in Latin than in the vernacular, refers to the idea of an allegorical/metaphysical garden (reference to a 'real', or existing, garden might be implied by Hortus Musicus) with various facets. The titles of the individual pieces/movements, with their respective garden image, are as follows: 1) Hortus Somniorum: a fleeting vision of a 'magical' garden 2) Hortus Temporis: a reflection of/on the floralclock described by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) in his [metaphysical] poem The Garden: How well the skilful gardener drew Of flowers and herbs this dial new Where from above the milder sun Does through a fragrant zodiac run; And, as it works, the industrious bee Computes its time as well as we. How could such sweet and wholesome hours Be reckoned but with herbs and flowers! 3) Hortus Cantus: A garden in which nature 'sings' (praises), in the manner of a 'chorale prelude' and ending with the cantus firmus transformed into bells. 4) Hortus Infinitatis: A meditative/formal garden representing Time suspended, in the form of a palindromic prolation canon combined with a harmonic ground (chaconne). 5) Saltatio Hortensis: A (summer) garden of dancing, celebratory nature. Its essence (and that of the entire cycle, both metaphorically and structurally/formally) is summed up in words spoken by Miranda in WH Auden's 1944 Tempest [Shakespeare]-inspired poem The Sea And The Mirror; So, to remember our changing garden, we Are linked as children in a circle dancing.
