Bill Holman's Great Big Band was a sensational ensemble! That album has just been re-issued on Mosaic Records. This chart is an example of Bill's talent for investing old material with brilliant new ideas. It originally featured Bill Perkins on tenor sax and Conte Candoli on trumpet solos. An exciting, amazingly fresh, inventive chart. Recorded on the Bill Holman's Great Big Band CD. 5-4-4-3.

Dreamin' Out Loud is a very accessible calypso chart that is reminiscent of Sonny Rollins's well known calypso tunes. An introductory chorale gives way to a happy, toe-tapping groove over which a tuneful melody is presented. The basic chord progression will accommodate multiple soloists. Great vehicle for exploring different rhythms and providing variety to a concert or festival program. Outstanding!

This is a great chart to feature your drummer and the entire ensemble! Starting out with a bombastic Eastern-sounding introduction (ala Genghis Khan), it then launches into a hard-driving minor blues stated by the trombone, trumpet and tenor saxophone. There is solo space for tenor saxophone, trumpet and drums with exciting ensemble figures throughout. This chart provides lots of room for your drummer to solo and fill. 5-4-4-3.

This is a wonderful chart, an old tune in a new dress, as only Bill Holman can do it. It's the exact chart as recorded by the terrific Charlie Barnet Big Band. The tempo is bright, a swinging excursion into the clever writing of Holman. Solo space for piano, alto, tenor, trumpet, and drums. There is a great sax section soli and the usual, wonderful, roaring ensemble shout choruses. A big finish ends an amazing chart. 5-5-4-4 (4 tpts. work just as well).

Inspired by a similar-titled original Bob Curnow composed for the great Doc Severinsen, The Doctor Is In is written for trumpet-extraordinaire Dr. Vern Sielert. Set as a medium-up swing feel, this chart features trumpet throughout and is exciting from beginning to end, including a great shout chorus to highlight the entire ensemble. If you are looking to showcase a great trumpet player, then this chart is a must-have! 5-4-4-4.

Here is a free swinging, remarkable chart from a new writer for Sierra. Allan Ganley's reputation and legacy in England drew our attention to this marvelous arrangement of One Morning in May. The arrangement is recorded on the CD June Time (Vocalion), and stands among the best versions out there. Starting with a soft, swinging ensemble, the chart moves into space for blowing for tenor saxophone and trumpet, returning to the initial feel with a wonderful, warm ending. All brass ranges are very moderate. This will be a great addition to any jazz band library. 5-4-4-4.

This edited version of Where's Teddy (as played and recorded by Maynard Ferguson's Birdland Dream Band) is much more playable for the trumpet section as a whole than the original pro version (which is also available). However, everything else is the same and it does not sacrifice any of the original chart's style and charm. It is a medium-swing minor blues tune with solo space for trumpet, tenor saxophone and drums. 5-4-4-3.

Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano. There is plenty of room for improvisation with soloists of your choice, including space for your drummer and any other percussion you might choose to add. The ending of the piece is wild and always brings audiences to their feet! 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes).
