French pianist and composer Serge Lancen (1922-2005) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Si J'Étais... for Cello Viola or Bassoon and Piano contributes to a significant catalogue of compositions by the composer. Si J'Étais... is a series of compositions by Lancen in which each piece depicts the style of a different great composer. Numbers 4 5 and 6 are influenced by Couperin Verdi and Albeniz. Adaptable to Cello Viola or Bassoon these Lancen pieces are exciting and informative ranging across a variety of musical styles. SiJ'Étais... is suitable for intermediate instrumentalists.

For Violoncello And Piano-This brief utterly charming and tuneful piece was probably committed to paper in 1894 though Fauré based it on an older version for cello and organ. The subsequent tempo change to ?Andante quasi Allegretto? made the work?soriginal title of ?Andante? obsolete. The change of name to ?Romance? was also better suited to its songlike nature. After its first performance in November 1894 the piece rapidly became popular and is a well-loved encore piece atconcerts today. This ?Romance? continues the Henle Urtext series of short pieces for cello by Fauré for which we have been able to engage David Geringas to add the performance markings.

for Violoncello and Piano-After the great success of his Élégie (HN 563) Fauré?s publisher Hamelle urged him to write another similarly effective piece for cello and piano. Papillon was probably already composed in 1884 though it was only published in1898. Whereas Fauré just wanted to call it ?Piece for violoncello? his publisher insisted on a more evocative title and ultimately succeeded in giving it its present name (meaning ?butterfly?). But Fauré is said to have beenindignant remarking: ?Butterfly or dung fly use whatever you want?. The success of the work proved Hamelle right Papillon is today just as popular with cellists as the Élegie and is now available as a Henle Urtext edition.

Lullaby (Op. 57 No. 2) was first composed in 1908 for Voice and Piano with lyrics by Christina Rosssetti. It was transcribed for Cello or Violin and Piano by the famous cellist Charles Warwick Evans (1885-1974) in 1918.Cyril Scott (1879-1970) was a British composer pianist and poet. His most popular works which he is largely remembered by today were written in the years preceding the Second World War however he continued to compose prolifically in the face of indifference from the outside world right up until his death at the age of 91. His music is predominantly in the Romantic style and now serves as an enchantingreminder of a bygone age.

Written in just two days in February 1849, Robert Schumann's Fantasy Pieces Op. 73 were first performed by his wife Clara and the clarinettist Johann Gottlieb Kotte. Initially entitled Soirée Pieces, the composer later had the works published under the name of Fantasy Pieces, thus establishing a connection with poetical aspects. The first edition published in July 1849 contained not only a clarinet part but also a violin and cello part. Since then, they have become an integral part of the Romantic repertoire for cello and piano. This edition is based on the text of the first edition as well as on subsequent corrections from Schumann's personal copy, with the extant composition manuscript serving as an important corrective. / Violoncelle Et Piano

Soon after its composition in 1886, Camille Saint-Saëns asked Auguste Durand that Le Carnaval des animaux, which he thought of as a parodic fantasia, should only appear in print posthumously. He probably believed that this entertainment would tarnish the seriousness of the rest of his oeuvre. The Carnaval was therefore published in February 1922, two months after the composer's death. Nevertheless the composer contravened the restrictions he had imposed: in 1886 Charles-Joseph Lebouc obtained the authorization to make and publish a transcription for piano and cello of the penultimate piece in this musical bestiary: no.13, Le Cygne . This arrangement, which became a bravura piece for cello, was an immense success each listener compelled to imagine a majestic swan gliding across a lake , a success which Saint-Saëns was obliged to accept. / Violoncelle / Durand
